Question about the selectivity of breaking into IB
Hey there everyone,
I'm curious about a career in banking. I've spent quite a bit of timing reading WSO, googling ect about the job and what it entails. One of the notions thats come up time and time again is that you need to be from an elite school to even get an interview.
But when I search on Linkedin, I see plenty of people claiming to work in IB as analysts or associates with degrees from Unis like Rutgers, UMiami or Villanova. Are they lying? Part of the few exceptions? Or is the conception you need to be in a good school a misconception?
You can break in from anywhere. Top school kids just don’t have to try as hard. Short and sweet answer
Top school =
1) More alumni in the industry. This is important for networking.
2) On campus recruiting. Important for networking as well.
3) More prestige on resume. Less important once you've gotten the first round, but still important.
Nothing is impossible, better schools just give you some tangible advantages.
