Referral From Non-IBD MD

Just got a referral from a top BB (GS/MS/JPM) MD but he works in S&T and not IBD. I got an email from HR saying I was given a referral, then directed to their internship program page where I could choose what to apply for. If the referral wasn't from IBD, does it still hold weight for me?

Based on previous WSO threads, a referral from a non-IBD MD, such as one from S&T, can still hold significant weight. Here are some key points to consider:

  • Referral Impact: Even if the MD is not from IBD, their referral can still be influential. MDs generally have considerable sway within the firm, and their endorsement can help your application stand out.
  • HR Process: HR typically acknowledges referrals and directs candidates to the appropriate application pages, as you've experienced. This indicates that the referral has been noted and will be considered during the application review.
  • Networking: Continue to network within the IBD division to strengthen your application further. Having multiple touchpoints within the firm can only enhance your chances.

In summary, while a referral from an IBD MD might be more directly relevant, a referral from an S&T MD at a top BB like GS, MS, or JPM is still valuable and can positively impact your application.
