Renewables M&A role exit opportunities.

I'm moving to a renewables m&a role at an advisory firm.

The role seems to be focused on the sale of operating wind farms/solar farms/operational companies.

I'm worried that it's going to pigeon hole me if I wanted to move from renewables m&a in the future to another sector say, consumer & retail m&a.

Would it give me skills and modelling if I wanted to move into something else? Would other firms in London look on those skills favorably.

It’s not highly transferable but if you are junior enough should be fine. You will be a whiz modeler after a year

I think that's what I'm worrried about. I think they mainly use DCFs but for operating assets which is not going to be transferable.

I could potentially transfer internally to another sector after a few years but I just worry that they won't look at me internally for other sectors if I'm too senior.

You will be modelling more complex things than >90% of generalists and doing debt sculpting etc. which are all magnitudes more technical than traditional M&A - modelling experience will be a real boon, if you have the exposure at your shop.

That said, where you may be lacking is commercial awareness because, generally, operating renewables are not difficult to commercially analyze - it's contracted, has set O&M, capex, etc. But you can work on that part if you decide you want a generalist position down the line.

I work in BB/EB infra and have passed all generalist M&A / PE modelling tests I've taken when I was contemplating an exit.
