Returning to IB after short stint in Corp Fin

Ignore employment info - Hi, I am currently in Corporate Finance after 3 years in IB at a large reputable bank. I left because I wasn't happy there (negative environment & culture). Looking to return to banking after this rather short stint and was wondering how this could be perceived by recruiters/interviewers. How could I frame it so that I don't appear erratic?

Please let me know your opinion or any advice you might have. Many thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points to consider when framing your return to investment banking after a stint in corporate finance:

  1. Highlight Your Experience and Skills:

    • Emphasize the skills and experience you gained during your time in corporate finance that are transferable to investment banking.
    • Showcase any specific achievements or projects that demonstrate your ability to add value in a banking role.
  2. Explain Your Motivation:

    • Clearly articulate why you want to return to investment banking. Focus on the aspects of banking that you enjoy and excel at, such as deal-making, financial modeling, or client interaction.
    • Avoid negative comments about your previous banking experience. Instead, frame your departure as a strategic move to gain broader experience.
  3. Address the Short Stint:

    • Be honest about your reasons for leaving your previous banking role, but keep it professional. Mention that you sought to broaden your skill set and gain a different perspective in corporate finance.
    • Explain that your time in corporate finance has reinforced your passion for investment banking and that you are now more certain than ever that it is the right career path for you.
  4. Show Commitment:

    • Demonstrate your long-term commitment to investment banking. Mention any steps you have taken to stay updated with the industry, such as networking, attending relevant courses, or following market trends.
    • Highlight your readiness to bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the role.
  5. Prepare for Tough Questions:

    • Be ready to discuss your career moves confidently and coherently. Practice your responses to potential questions about your career trajectory to ensure you come across as thoughtful and deliberate rather than erratic.

By focusing on these points, you can present a compelling narrative that positions your return to investment banking as a well-considered and strategic decision.
