Richmond VA Thread

Ignore title, incoming IB AN1 here moving to Richmond June. I wanted to started this thread to get the general finance setting in Richmond since I’ve never lived there and never thought I’d live there. If anyone knows general spots where the finance community comes together, some of the better IB, PE, PC, and other alts firm, and just general things to do as a young person there, that’d be much appreciated.

Richmond, VA, has a growing finance scene, particularly in the middle market space. Here's what you need to know:

Finance Community and Firms:

  1. Investment Banks:

    • Harris Williams: A highly regarded middle-market investment bank headquartered in Richmond. Known for strong private equity deal flow and solid exit opportunities into PE.
    • Matrix Capital Markets: Another prominent middle-market investment bank with a focus on M&A advisory.
  2. Private Equity Firms:

    • Boxwood Capital Partners: A middle-market private equity firm based in Richmond.
    • Blue Heron Capital: Focuses on growth equity investments, particularly in healthcare and technology-enabled services.
  3. Other Financial Institutions:

    • Regional banks and smaller boutique firms also have a presence in Richmond, offering opportunities in corporate finance, wealth management, and more.

Networking and Community Spots:

  • Networking Events: Keep an eye out for finance-related meetups or events hosted by local organizations or universities like the University of Richmond.
  • Social Hubs: The downtown area, particularly around Shockoe Slip and Scott’s Addition, is popular for young professionals. These areas have a mix of bars, breweries, and restaurants where you might bump into others in the finance community.

Things to Do as a Young Professional:

  • Social Scene: Scott’s Addition is a hotspot with breweries, cideries, and rooftop bars.
  • Outdoor Activities: The James River offers kayaking, hiking, and biking trails.
  • Cultural Spots: Check out the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) or the historic neighborhoods like Church Hill.

Richmond offers a mix of professional opportunities and a vibrant lifestyle, making it an appealing city for young finance professionals.

Richmond is a great place for finance and to live long term, honestly. Finance scene is dominated by Harris Williams as BB+T split up into a bunch of smaller boutiques because most of the Richmond people didn’t want to relocate to Houston. Piper Sandler and Jefferies also have great presences there, have heard nothing but great things. PE/VC wise it’s smaller but growing - apogem capital is a great MM shop and blue heron capital is another growth stage firm that comes to mind.

Culture in Richmond is fantastic and very unique - mix of southern hospitality with its own style so people will be very nice. COL is near nothing and the area is incredibly rich with opportunities for night life and great music if you’re in to that (bluegrass and indie are particularly big primarily due to the Dave Matthew’s influence).

Most of the social life for young people centers around the neighborhood of Scott’s addition, which has exploded in the past several years. If you’re an outdoorsman Richmond is the best place to be as well - the James river has a ton of opportunities for hiking, fishing, and kayaking, with belle isle and pony pasture parks typically being the most popular. If you want to know more feel free to PM

Thank you for the detailed reply! Could you maybe elaborate a little more on Apogem and Blue Heron? Thanks again

Seconding the comment on Scott's Addition being the core for younger and even single middle aged people. Married and older people go to Westhampton area around Libby/Grove. As far as activities it's mostly active things, rec sports teams, hiking, run clubs etc. the James River park system and proximity to mountains gives a lot of options. There's also a huge food scene, lots of great restaurants, specialty grocers, farmers market etc.

ACG Richmond has a lot of events for the investment community, but you're more likely to bump into people at restaurants and breweries. People in Richmond go out all the time.

I really appreciate the further detail here. Scott’s Addition is definitely an area I am considering moving to. Any suggestion between the Fan and Scott’s?

Also you mentioned breweries, which ones are the best to go to? On another note, what are some of the best pizza spots (NY style, deep dish, etc.)?

Scott's is going to be newer apartments, larger, updated appliances, W/D in unit. The Fan is cuter and in some ways more walkable but most apartments are in older outdated buildings, the area has more college kids.

Ardent, Vasen and Veil are the main breweries. Pizza here is mid, best is the new spot in Bingo Brewery (NY Style), Fire & Hops and Zorch. Bottom's Up is the only deep dish. Feel free to DM questions too
