Rising Sophomore New to RX - Do I have time for 2027?

I'm at a Canadian target (Ivey, QCOMM), which is essentially considered a U.S. semi-target, and I've just recently started reading into RX.

I'm ~1/3 through Moyer and was wondering if US SA27 RX recruiting is still achievable. I'm genuinely interested in the space and really motivated to break in—willing to put in the work wherever needed.

Also curious about timelines and what the processes look like if anyone would be willing to share. I'd really appreciate any help or advice.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Timelines for RX Recruiting:

    • Recruiting for U.S. Summer Analyst (SA) roles, including RX (restructuring), typically starts very early. Elite boutiques (EBs) and some bulge brackets (BBs) may open applications as early as February or March of your sophomore year, with interviews and superdays following shortly after.
    • For Canadian students at semi-targets like Ivey or Queen’s Commerce (QCOMM), the timeline can feel even tighter due to the need to network extensively and overcome visa-related challenges.
  2. Preparation:

    • You're on the right track with Moyer's Distressed Debt Analysis. Completing it will give you a solid technical foundation. However, you should also focus on understanding financial modeling, valuation techniques, and bankruptcy processes, as these are critical in RX.
    • Networking is key. Start reaching out to alumni and professionals in RX at firms like Evercore, Moelis, PJT, and Houlihan Lokey. Building relationships early can help you secure interviews.
    • Consider gaining relevant experience through internships at boutique investment banks or restructuring advisory firms during your sophomore summer. This will strengthen your resume for SA27 recruiting.
  3. Challenges for Canadian Students:

    • Visa issues can sometimes be a hurdle for Canadian students aiming for U.S. roles. Some firms may prioritize U.S. candidates due to these complications, as noted in previous WSO threads. However, strong networking and demonstrating your value can help mitigate this.
  4. Action Plan:

    • Now: Finish Moyer, start networking, and refine your resume.
    • Fall/Winter: Apply for sophomore internships at boutiques or smaller firms to gain experience.
    • Spring 2026: Begin preparing for SA27 applications by practicing technical and behavioral interview questions.
    • Summer 2026: Leverage your internship experience to network further and prepare for superdays.

With your motivation and willingness to work hard, breaking into RX for SA27 is achievable. Just stay proactive and focused!

You’re going to be fine. As long as you keep reading through Moyer + classic accounting, valuation, EV/EQV, and LBO technicals, learn about recent updates to the restructuring world (and learn your “case” for interviews), and network effectively, you will have a fair shot at restructuring recruiting. Keep in mind that processes will be earlier than last year (as the trend stands for the past few years) so actively adjust your weekly work schedule accordingly and leave a nice “equity cushion” of days/weeks at the end to practice for interviews, deepen your intuition, etc. Good luck in the process!
