SA 25 offer rescinded

All incoming SA 25 at my bank just had our offers rescinded because the bank has been struggling with the recent slowdown in M&A activity. It’s a really small firm so I’m not surprised they’re facing headwinds, especially with tariffs.

The timing just sucks. I’ve been holding this offer for over a year, and now I have a month to figure out my summer. What would you do in my situation?

When your offer gets rescinded, especially this close to the summer, it’s critical to act quickly and strategically. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should do:

  1. Leverage Your Network Immediately

    • Reach out to everyone in your network—alumni, former colleagues, professors, and LinkedIn connections. Explain your situation briefly and ask if they know of any opportunities.
    • Smaller firms, boutiques, or even unpaid internships can be a great fallback. As one WSO user pointed out, many smaller groups are often open to taking on interns, especially if you’re willing to work for free.
  2. Target Smaller Firms and Boutiques

    • While larger banks may have completed their hiring cycles, smaller firms and boutiques often have more flexibility. They may still be looking for summer interns or could create a role if you demonstrate value.
  3. Consider Alternative Roles

    • If you can’t secure another investment banking internship, look into roles in corporate finance, consulting, or even startups. These experiences can still add value to your resume and help you develop transferable skills.
  4. Polish Your Resume and Pitch

    • Update your resume to highlight your skills and experiences. Be ready to explain the rescinded offer situation professionally and without negativity. Focus on your eagerness to contribute and learn.
  5. Stay Persistent and Positive

    • The timing is tough, but persistence is key. Keep applying, networking, and following up. Even if you don’t land your ideal role, getting something on your resume for the summer is crucial.
  6. Prepare for Future Recruiting Cycles

    • Use this time to strengthen your technical and behavioral skills. Consider taking courses or certifications to enhance your profile. This will also prepare you for full-time recruiting.

Remember, as tough as this situation is, it’s not the end of the road. Many professionals have faced similar setbacks and still built successful careers. Stay proactive and adaptable!

bump which firm? signed to a small shop too and a little concerned if this is going to occur

Heard this happened to a few Aggies at Woodrock (small boutique) in Houston. Horrible spot to be in. Get your resume updated and exhaust any personal network you have.

If it was me and I rescinded offers this close to start dates I would want to help and offer my personal network so maybe reach out to people on the team you had a relationship with.

Best of luck.
