Semi Target or Alpha Chapter

I’m a rising senior in high school looking to break into investment banking one day. Currently thinking about the best colleges to go to, and semi target schools like Illinois, Indiana, Penn State, or even Ohio State are probably my best bet considering my resume. This may be a wildcard, but I’m also considering joining a fraternity to develop immediate connections in the industry. Is this worth it?

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

  1. Semi-Target Schools:

    • Schools like Illinois, Indiana, Penn State, and Ohio State are considered semi-targets. These schools have solid regional placement and can provide good opportunities, especially if you network effectively.
    • Examples of semi-targets include:
      • USC, UCLA, CMC (for West Coast)
      • UT Austin, Emory, Rice, Vandy (for Texas and the South)
      • BC, Baruch, Villanova, Lehigh, GW, and top Liberal Arts schools (for East Coast)
      • Indiana, Wisco, Illinois, WUSL (for Chicago and Midwest)
  2. Fraternity Connections:

    • Fraternities can indeed provide strong networking opportunities. The Alpha Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at Miami Ohio is noted for having solid alumni connections and good placement into middle-market (MM) firms.
    • Investment banks do value strong networks, and being part of a fraternity with a good track record can be beneficial. However, it's not a guarantee and should be complemented with strong academic performance and relevant internships.
  3. Investment Banking Recruitment:

    • Investment banks typically recruit from target and semi-target schools. While fraternities can help, the primary focus should be on attending a school with a strong finance program and good placement records.
    • Networking is crucial. Whether through fraternities, school clubs, or alumni networks, building connections is key to breaking into investment banking.

In summary, attending a semi-target school like Illinois, Indiana, Penn State, or Ohio State can provide good opportunities, especially if you leverage networking opportunities such as those provided by fraternities like Beta Theta Pi at Miami Ohio. Focus on maintaining a strong GPA, gaining relevant internships, and building a robust network.
