Should I be doing more as an intern?

First of all I started my internship yesterday and I have to say that I am relieved with how nice the people are. I did not expect this much work load because in just these two days I spent ~18-20 hours in the office and did like 2-3 hours of work home. Yesterday lowkey I was given some tasks and I was happy to help as much as I could, I was even lucky enough to be allowed in a client meeting today. Yesterday I asked for some extra work I could do home or any way I could help and I was told I could prepare notes for a client meeting that I would go over with an associate in the morning. I prepped my ass off and I would say I did a pretty good job today. I am just curious is it okay to ask for work or does it seem too tryhard? I mean if I didn't ask for anything to do I would be sitting there every time I complete the task they give me unless I was called upon so from time to time I would try to ask other analysts if I could do anything that would basically make their job easier for them (which thinking about it now is mostly going over a looot of numbers and documents). I also try to network I guess? I try to go to lunch and eat something even if I am not hungry.

Also something more important I wanted to know about shoes. Whenever I had to dress so formal I didn't have to do it for days and hours non stop and idk if it gets any better but my shoes literally destroy back of my feet like the tendon part (Achilles tendon) and it really hurts to walk in them for like 2 hours (I gotta take a train and a bus to get to work) so like are there any pads or something anyone could recommend I could put there not to obliterate my foot?

It sounds like you're off to a strong start in your internship! Here's some advice based on the most helpful WSO content:

On Asking for More Work:

  1. Proactive Approach is Good: Asking for more work, especially when you're done with your tasks, is a great way to show initiative. It doesn't come off as "tryhard" as long as you're respectful and not overstepping. Analysts and associates often appreciate interns who are eager to help lighten their workload.
  2. Balance is Key: While it's great to ask for more work, don't overextend yourself to the point of burnout. You're already putting in long hours, so pace yourself to maintain quality and energy throughout the internship.
  3. Networking: Joining colleagues for lunch, even when you're not hungry, is a smart move. Building relationships is just as important as completing tasks during your internship.

On Shoes:

  1. Comfort is Crucial: Based on WSO's shoe advice, investing in high-quality, comfortable dress shoes is essential since you'll be wearing them for long hours. Brands like Allen Edmonds are often recommended for their balance of quality and comfort. If you're on a budget, their factory seconds website offers great deals on shoes with minor flaws that don't affect wearability.
  2. Preventing Blisters: To protect your Achilles tendon, consider using heel pads or blister prevention patches. Products like moleskin or gel heel liners can cushion the back of your shoes and prevent rubbing.
  3. Breaking Them In: If your shoes are new, wear them around the house with thick socks to break them in before long commutes. This can help soften the leather and reduce discomfort.

You're doing great by being proactive and thoughtful about both your work and comfort. Keep it up, and you'll make a strong impression!
