Should you put political activity on your resume?
I'm starting the SA application process, and my resume currently has work I've done for a congressman of one party, and my membership and work for the College Xs of the other party. Since the first one is my congressman back home, I think that one's fine (though a part I mention now is drafting documents on financial regulation), but do I risk getting an interview if I mention the actual political activity?
Depends on how you frame what you did. There is no guarantee anything good can be gained from asserting your political views on your resume – it's a gamble depending on who sees it.
That being said, with the proper wording/framing, you could find a way to make it work. I would recommend to not state the political party.. no reason to give anyone any reason to not like you.
Sounds pretty risky. If you're even considering this you're probably extreme enough to cause a polarizing view. I'd say helping out a republican campaign and applying for jobs on either coast is risky.
Third Party Political Experience on resume (Originally Posted: 09/27/2017)
All, I have had various positions in a local and regional chapters of a third party (think libertarian, green, etc) including the cofounder of a local chapter and board member for another larger regional chapter. Should I include this on a resume? I think it shows leadership and volunteer experience outside of work, but am worried that it could be seen as a negative, due to it not being affiliated with one of the two major parties, and therefore maybe not seen as legitimate. Thoughts?
Can you legitimatize it in some way? IMO the group you founded is solid resume material.
Well I was a co-founder, grew the Facebook page to 100 people, but only had maybe 5 members attending meetings. Not sure how that looks for a local chapter in a suburban area for a third party?
I would say "who cares" but this the real world hah. Honestly I think putting a "Classical Libertarian" or other 3rd party political groups I think might be less polarizing than Team Red and team Blue.
I probably wouldn't, there's generally more downside than upside to including anything political. Noting party affiliation comes with a whole host of generalizations/assumptions that are more likely to hurt than help. Given how random recruiting is, no sense in rubbing someone the wrong way over something irrelevant to the job.
If the group you founded was much larger/active than you described or if you were very involved as a board member that might be a different story, but as it is, I'd leave it off
