Skills from structuring

Hi all,

I have recently been introduced to structuring within investment banks. As my internship for next summer is in Global Markets, I could well be placed within that & at the moment, structuring seems quite interesting to me.

I have a few questions about it though. Would appreciate all constructive answers!

  1. How long has structuring been around in investment banks whilst being called "Structuring"? If it's long, then why isn't it discussed as much as Sales or Trading?
  2. I understand what structurers do, but what skills do they develop, other than soft skills such as teamwork? They must gain a lot of understanding about each product that they cover, for example Emerging Market FX, I presume?
  3. Where can these structurers go after spending 2 or 3 years at a particular bank? Are there any buy side institutions that particularly look for structurers? Could they become traders on the buy side? Where do they go, & which skills do they take with them that are valued on the buy side?

Thank you!
