Skills needed to succeed in banking/finance?

Hi everyone,

Context: Incoming BB SA here. Recently been going through some quarantine inflicted self-reflections. I'm not a very strong quantitative person. I'm more of a "big picture" type. I enjoy learning about the reasoning behind deals, market activity, and investment theses as that's what drew me to IB in the first place. I like working with teams, process management, and creating marketing materials (believe it or not).

While I understand the value of modeling and definitely want to gain the technical knowledge, I just know that I'm not going to get a hard on thinking about working on a merger model. I know at the senior level, the work becomes more qualitative. Obviously, you can't get to that level without going through the monkey work. I'm just not sure if I'm cut out for this. Don't get me wrong, I know it's not rocket science, but I'm just unsure if I will enjoy what I'm doing. I feel that you should at least not dread the work as much as you dread the hours, no?

I'm very interested in PE after IB. Exploring VC, Growth, and LBO. Would I be more successful/enjoy work at one over the other? I know more quantitative people tend to go to LBO shops b/c of the modeling.

Maybe I'm just overthinking and will figure it out on my own. Just wanted to hear from others on this. Has anyone else in finance felt this way? Any advice?
