SMBC or FT Partners

I have 2 opportunities for SA 2027. FT Partners in their sponsor coverage role, and SMBC in their corporate and investment banking division (likely TMT coverage as i networked with someone there - if that makes any difference). I understand neither of these roles are optimal  - whether thats through lateral transfer or whatever it is - which would be the best to start between these 2, if i want to eventually end up in pe or pc.

Could so pros and cons to each. If you can try to find a way to communicate with them directly about your career goals and see which may be the better option that seems like the best paths. Banks even do “sell days” sometimes where candidates they have given offers to are given the opportunity to meet and speak with more people for the bank to convince them to join.

That said, if you really can’t speak to either of them more about your interest in private markets investing here is what’s in my head:

FT partners well regarded name in fintech / financial world. If you want to do private markets investing in the fintech / financial world then I could see this firm being a good option. Given color above you may need to lateral internally to a more M&A focused role if you want to be an investment professional at a PE/C firm. Or maybe your sponsors coverage group sets you up well for a BD role at a mega fund or something. I even saw TPG post for a BD person. Tons of MM PE shops have BD people who help them get deal flow. That could be an interesting seat at these firms.

SMBC could also see as a balance sheet big bank option but may require a lateral to a bank with a stronger U.S. capital markets presence before moving into a PE seat. If you’ll learn the technical investing skills and get deal experience sooner I could see this being the better option.

I hope this helps. Good luck

Can u please elaborate on SMBC? I will be interning there and not sure what to expect
