smoking and banking
Is smoking cigarettes frowned upon in banking? I'm not a smoker but occasionally smoke when drinking...is that a bad idea?

Where are you from that makes you think people "in banking" are so radically estranged from your world?
now what about the bud...
I remember when I started at my SA stint I was stunned that nobody smoked cigarettes in the entire office (approx. 50 people). I figured with all the stress that there'd be a good amount, but maybe they just don't have the time to go outside.
How about cannabis?
Plenty of bankers smoke, especially when they are out drinking. Or they smoke the occasional cigar, dip, whatever. The reason you don't see a ton of smokers outside banks is that there just isn't time to be a hardcore smoker.
One of my friends who had over a pack a day habit got yelled at for leaving her desk too often to smoke. She has since cut back and now dips at her desk.
Nothing like a female who dips. Sexxxy.
Glad to know thats what you like.
That's hot
Sarcasm - personally find it very unattractive
That's really gross. Why wouldn't she just put a nicotine patch on or something?
Snus is a great alternative to dip and cigarettes. Its essentially spit-less dip that comes in pouches. You leave a pouch in your lip for a half hour or so and gives a great buzz.

My former sr trader used to dip at the office throughout the day...a habit which i found/find utterly repugnant regardless of sex...and as if the act itself wasnt enough to disgust, he would spit the remnants into a diet coke bottle and leave that black liquid filth on his desk. Which in turn forced one to wonder about the possibility of him or someone else drinking it by accident. FKG disgusting sht. Did I mention he was a prck? Go figure.

Just curious...is smoking frowned upon when you are in IB/S&T? Do smokers even have the opportunity to take smoke breaks throughout the day?
S&T certainly depends on the day. Some days are slow as death and I would disappear for 30+ minutes. Other days I had to sprint just to pee and gave serious consideration to wearing a diaper.
I don't smoke and personally think poorly of those who do, but dipping was quite prevalent on the desk.
I realize that those seem incongruent but it's my opinion. So suck it.
haha wtf? why would dipping be more respectable? it's just as nasty spitting into some cup every minute
He said its more prevalent, no one said anything about one being more respectable than the other.
hahaha i'm willing to pay cash money for a video/pic with a trader packing a lip
You can get packets of dip where you aren't spitting all the time. Some people just swallow the shit. Either way it isn't about actually being better, it is about your ass in the seat making money not out smoking.
Anthony, those dip packets are called Snus..Europeans love that stuff
Hahaha... The gatorade 32 ouncer doubles as a great spitter and pisser
i have witnessed and can personally attest to Cartwright's statement that dipping can be prevalent in trading. absolutely disgusting if you ask me...
Interesting...I guess sneaking out for a smoke every hour (like I currently do) is out of the question? I should be quitting anyways....
^ yes def quit, it's a good lifestyle choice
Dipping is very prevalent in S&T; most people don't give a shit. I dip at my desk in IB where people care even less. I think some of you have this image of a dude with a big chaw of crap in his mouth. I use Skoal pouches and you can't even tell I have a lip in unless I were to tell you.
However, in my 3+ years in IB, I have only worked with one regular smoker from analyst to MD.
Copenhagen. I dipped for a long time, would do it at work, clients' offices, lawyers' offices (they are all filth anyway). I finally gave up chew this past January but I think about going back every day. I like to tell myself I'm just not chewing today.
Many of the guys I started with chew. Wasn't a big deal as long as it wasn't all over our faces - I did once get counseled by a Senior to not do it in a snapple bottle because someone may drink it. 7 years later, this November, I was sitting at a law firm and my lawyer drank my Starbucks cup; that's right monkeys my spitter. Too bad for him, he puked for the next 30 min. :).
I oftentimes dip while studying, granted I live in the deep south so this may or may not be more acceptable than NYC. I did an accounting internship at a fortune 100 company and my cube was on the same floor as the CEO; I saw him dipping all the time (skoal for those who want to know what dip will make you the most successful).

Strategies for those of us who work WAY better with a cigarette every 1 to 1.5 hours? Any ideas.
Also I'd love to hear about BSDs on the street who smoke. I know Jim Simons (Rentech) is a 2 pack'a'dayer.
Do what you need to do. Most people in my office don't notice if someone gets up for 5 - 15 minutes. We all assume the person is meeting with an associate or doing work. I must admit though, every 1 - 1.5 hours is a bit often. There will be times when you just can't get away. I'd suggest trying to kick the habit so you don't find yourself in a bad situation.
I suspect he has his own office.
I smoke, which means I won't take any job that requires me to be based above the fifth floor - takes too long otherwise (not a BSD though).
Trading + Cigarette smoking (Originally Posted: 08/07/2008)
There are a few threads on this topic (i always search before posting something) but the responses aren't that great. my question specifically concerns traders (not sales traders) taking cigarette breaks during the trading day. since traders "always have to be looking at their screens" is it possible to sneak out for a smoke break or two from 930-4? is it looked down upon?

Yes, and you dont need a blackberry. I dont even own one. But i dont smoke either ;)
Seems to vary from desk to desk. Either the whole desks smokes or none at all. A funny anecdote below.
Client: Who is this bob: my name is bob Client: wheres Vinny bob: he stepped off the desk Client: tell him to hurry back or im taking this to another shop. bob: Vinny hurry up you got an order he said hurry or hes giving it to another shop.

How many people in IBD smoke? Is it common? Is it looked down upon?
42 people in IBD smoke.
I think it's actually 41? I heard one of the guys died of lung cancer or something ridiculous?
