Solo Intern in NYC this summer – How to network & find new connections/friends?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently a student at a Midwest liberal arts college and will be in NYC this summer for an internship at a fintech firm in SoHo. I'm in a unique spot because I'm the only intern at my firm and the youngest on the team, so I don't have a built-in 'intern class' to hang out with.

I’ve already secured a Summer Analyst offer at a BB for next summer, so I really want to use this time to hit the ground running. I have two main goals:

  1. Networking: I want to connect with bankers just to learn more about the industry and different group cultures before I start my SA stint next year. Since my alumni network isn't the strongest, what's the best way to cold-outreach when you've already got an offer in hand? Is it weird to ask for coffee chats at firms other than where I'll be interning next year?
  2. Social: Since I’m solo at my firm, where do people meet other finance interns or find new friends/connections? Are there specific bars, run clubs, or events that are basically 'hubs' for people in their early 20s interning in the city? Also, looking for any free World Cup watch party recs.

I’m very close to everything, but I don’t want to spend the whole summer working alone. Any advice on where to start or specific groups/apps to check out would be huge.

Thanks!

To make the most of your summer in NYC, here’s a breakdown of actionable advice based on the most helpful WSO content:

Networking Tips

  1. Cold Outreach with a Purpose:

    • Since you already have a BB Summer Analyst offer, leverage that in your outreach. Mention your upcoming role and express genuine curiosity about learning more about the industry and group cultures.
    • Use LinkedIn or alumni databases to identify bankers in NYC. Even if your alumni network isn’t strong, don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals at other firms. It’s not weird to ask for coffee chats at firms other than where you’ll be interning—just frame it as an opportunity to learn and build relationships.
    • A simple email template could be:
"Hi Name, I’m a student at College interning at [Fintech Firm] in SoHo this summer. I’ll be joining [BB Firm] as a Summer Analyst next year and would love to hear about your experience in [specific group/firm]. Would you be open to a quick coffee chat? I’m happy to meet at a time and place convenient for you."
    • Be specific about your availability and follow up with a calendar invite once they agree.
  2. Day Trips for Networking:

    • Plan a dedicated day or two for networking. As highlighted in WSO threads, giving people a week or two heads-up and meeting them in person can be highly effective. Even if nothing immediate comes from it, you’ll build long-term connections.
  3. Leverage NYC’s Finance Scene:

    • Attend alumni events, industry meetups, or panels. Many young professionals in NYC are open to networking, especially over coffee or drinks. Keep an eye on LinkedIn events or Meetup groups related to finance.

Social Tips

  1. Meeting Other Interns:

    • NYC has a vibrant social scene for young professionals. Popular spots for finance interns include bars in Midtown or the Financial District, such as The Dead Rabbit or Stone Street Tavern.
    • Join fitness classes or run clubs like those at Equinox or SoulCycle. These are great for meeting like-minded people and staying active.
    • Apps like Bumble BFF or Meetup can help you connect with others in your age group or industry.
  2. Events and Activities:

    • Look for free World Cup watch parties at places like Bryant Park or bars with outdoor seating. NYC often hosts public screenings for major events.
    • Explore cultural events, museums, or even cooking classes. These are excellent ways to meet people outside of work.
  3. Be Spontaneous:

    • As one WSO user shared, throwing yourself into social situations can lead to unexpected friendships. Whether it’s joining a social club, attending a happy hour, or saying yes to an invite, being open-minded can make a big difference.

Final Thoughts

Balancing networking and socializing is key. Use your weekends to explore the city and meet new people, and dedicate weekdays or evenings to professional networking. NYC is a hub of opportunity, and with a proactive approach, you’ll make the most of your summer both professionally and socially.
