Soph Summer Ideas

Hi all,

I recently got a BB offer for junior summer(IB, NYC) but I don't have my sophomore summer figured out yet. I was wondering I should/could do for this summer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some ideas for your sophomore summer:

  1. Finance-Related Internships:

    • Look for roles in corporate finance, wealth management, private equity, hedge funds, or even smaller boutique investment banks. These experiences will help you build relevant skills and demonstrate your interest in finance.
  2. F500 or Local Companies:

    • If you can't secure a finance-specific role, consider internships in the finance or accounting divisions of Fortune 500 companies or local firms. As shared in WSO threads, even a small finance-related role can add value to your resume.
  3. Networking and Skill Building:

    • Use this time to network with professionals in the industry. Attend coffee chats, info sessions, and alumni events. Additionally, enhance your technical skills by learning financial modeling, Excel, or other relevant tools.
  4. Diversity Programs:

    • If eligible, explore diversity recruiting programs like those offered by Barclays, Citigroup, or Credit Suisse. These programs often provide exposure to the industry and can lead to future opportunities.
  5. Pre-IB Internships:

    • Consider internships in areas like private equity, hedge funds, or wealth management. As mentioned in WSO discussions, these roles are highly regarded and can set you apart during junior year recruiting.
  6. Alternative Experiences:

    • If finance roles are unavailable, focus on internships that align with your broader career story. For example, roles in consulting, tech, or startups can still showcase your analytical and problem-solving skills.

Remember, the goal is to gain meaningful experience that ties into your overall narrative and positions you well for your junior summer IB role. Good luck!
