Specialty Finance FIG

Anyone here familiar or work in specialty finance FIG? Curious to learn about the day to day on the role and skillset required. I am currently in another banking role (SPG Group) and we occasionally speak with/work with the FIG guys.

Hey I worked a bit in the specialty finance space though as a generalist who worked with that team a fair amount during my analyst stint. Day to day was like any other banking role for the most part, just the group covered specialty finance clients. Def helped to learn / know more financial technicals like how to value financial institutions and take the time to understand how those businesses made money. Beyond that it was fairly traditional FIG type banking, though some of the companies were a little nichier and had sometimes more fee/service type revenue and even some EBITDA driven businesses. Otherwise was like valuing any other financial institution with a focus on book value, asset quality, etc. seemed like there were some interesting companies in the space

I was a generalist mainly doing m&a and restructuring so fairly modeling heavy. This was at Moelis so it was Moelis hours. Among the other junior bankers I saw doing work for this group / set of clients while I was around I think exits tended to be toward the HF side of things but just my personal limited experience (I’m mainly thinking of like 2 other people that come to mind that worked with this team, there may have been others that im not remembering right now so data may be skewed significantly but better than no data I hope)
