St. John’s (NY) for Investment Banking? Any Actual Success Stories?
Hi Everyone,
I'm deciding between St. John's and Arizona State for undergrad, specifically for breaking into IB. The schools are similar in price based on merit (Money is a factor, that's why I'm between these two). I’ve heard the classic line about “being in NYC helps,” but when I search LinkedIn, I actually see more ASU grads in NYC IB roles than St. John’s grads.
My questions:
- Is St. John’s really a realistic path to NYC IB, or is it mostly small/regional shops?
- Does being in NYC actually help with networking, or is the alumni base more important?
- For anyone who made it from St. John’s (or ASU) to IB, what worked and what didn’t?
Would love to hear war stories, both good and bad. Thanks!
Never met a single St. Johns alumni in IBD/PE/HF/ER/AM here in NYC these last 11 years. Like seriously lol. I've met a few ASU peeps.
Truthfully think you need to approach this from a perspective of which school would you have more fun at. Your shot at IBD out of either is going to be slim.
Same here. Also, all the ASU alums were hot chicks, from my experience.
OPs question really triggered me to think long and hard about it and then cross reference with LinkedIn connects and seriously, not a single one. A few Brooklyn College & Baruch alumni though.
Agreed, haven't even heard of St. John, let alone met anyone who went there. Much better placement at Baruch for sure
I've met a bunch of Arizona kids in top tier finance roles. I also think Arizona people help each other out. Also helps to be in a school with a big sports culture. If you go to Arizona, learn about your golf, baseball, basketball, football, etc and you'll connect with a lot of finance folks.
I have never met a St Johns person ever in fuhnance, however, their law school seems to do well and have seen some big law people from their law school in Big Law roles.
Worked in IB/Corp Dev before working in college admissions consulting full-time. I actually have a strong opinion on this one - I think ASU is a way better choice. You will need to be disciplined and network, but ASU's IBIS is legit - they place at great firms, and the students tend to do well, it's also a way more fun school overall. Again, you will need to put in the work (average student accepted had a 3.96 GPA in the last class), but it's also going to give you a MUCH larger alumni network for the rest of your life.
Second this, know a good amount of people from IBIS that placed well. But yeah, def gotta grind
