Summer Analyst Dress code

Is it expected to wear a suit everyday as an intern at an EB (EVR, MOE, PJT) or will it likely be the first week you wear a full suit and then the rest of the time is just a button down and slacks? Just want to buy my clothes now and know roughly what I will need, thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about the dress code for summer analysts at elite boutiques (EBs) like Evercore (EVR), Moelis (MOE), and PJT Partners:

  1. Suit Expectations:

    • Wearing a full suit every day is generally expected, especially at EBs, which tend to maintain a more formal culture compared to some other firms.
    • While some offices may relax the dress code slightly after the first week, it's safer to assume you'll need to wear a suit daily unless explicitly told otherwise.
  2. Ties:

    • Ties are often optional unless you're attending client meetings or formal events. However, it's better to have a few ties on hand just in case.
  3. Shirts and Pants:

    • Button-down shirts and suit pants are the minimum standard. Even if the office culture is slightly relaxed, this combination is a safe bet.
  4. Shoes:

    • Stick to classic, polished dress shoes like Oxfords. Double monk straps and penny loafers can work, but avoid anything too casual. Brown shoes are generally acceptable, but black is the safest choice for formal settings.
  5. Casual Fridays:

    • Some firms allow for a more relaxed dress code on Fridays, but jeans are typically not acceptable. Opt for business casual attire like chinos and a blazer.
  6. How Many Sets to Buy:

    • Aim for at least 2-3 suits, 5-7 shirts, and 2 pairs of dress shoes to rotate throughout the internship. This ensures you maintain a professional appearance without over-wearing your clothes.
  7. Facial Hair:

    • Well-groomed facial hair is usually acceptable, but clean-shaven is the safest option unless you notice a more relaxed standard in your office.

Ultimately, it's better to err on the side of being overdressed than underdressed. You can always adjust based on the specific office culture once you start. Good luck with your internship!

Currently a 2nd year analyst at PJT/DA Davidson/Evercore (ignore title). Fursuit for the first week, than your pick of spongebob squarepants merch for the rest of the summer. strict no shoes & no socks policy around the office. Interns are strongly discouraged from wearing glasses as it will intimidate the associates, so stick with contacts if your visually impaired. happy to answer any additional questions.

On a serious note - would dress full suit for the first week at least to see what the vibe is (some groups are more chill than others).

However, honestly even if your group is more lax, I'd recommend still wearing the blazer in each day just to have a good impression. You could also bring a nice quarter zip and put the blazer on the back of your chair & wear the quarterzip later in the day once you're locked in and trying to get comfy (especially if it's late at night & the seniors are gone).

Wouldn't recommend rocking the patagucci or loafers - you gotta earn that s#*t after you get a few deals under your belt.

Everyone will wear full suits for the first few days but the dress code becomes relaxed pretty quick, at least in my experience. Most of the summer we’d just wear a dress shirt with nice pants. Quarter zip if it’s cold. Just avoid expensive/flashy items and you’re good to go as long as your clothes are simple and fit you well.

I only wore a suit once (intern summer project presentation) and got return offer. NYC subway is simply too hot. If you know your group is hardo then wear a suit but I think only first day matters.

Personally would rather have my intern in slacks and a shirt than suited and soaked in sweat
