Summer Analyst - First Day

Hey guys and gals, I hope you are all doing well. Tomorrow I start my internship program at a bank and I am writing to reach out and see if any of you guys have some advice for someone starting their journey in the field with the hopes of securing a return opportunity. From wardrobe recommendations, networking tips, attitude advice, etc, what is something you wish you knew on your first day? Any and all tips / advice will be valued and appreciated.

Thanks again!

Honestly just take a breath. It's a lot to learn, your team wants you to succeed and expects to you come in with a low level of knowledge so don't roll in too hot or feel like you need to prove yourself from day 1. The humble, chill interns who want to learn and aren't crazy hardo or competitive are the best.

For wardrobe, full suit for day 1 of training and day 1 hit the desk - by day 2 you can wear dress shirt and pants, but it's tradition to dress up a bit for the first day.

Echoing the above comment re: being a tryhard. Obviously it’s important to work hard, but the overwhelming consensus from senior people (at least at my firm) is that soft skills are just as important as hard skills, and if you start being that intern who thinks he knows everything, doesn’t take criticism, tries to boss around other interns, it will totally backfire.

The “airport test” should always be top of mind. Good luck!
