Target Bonuses

Hi - I have two offers I’m currently considering. Both have the same bases but ones target bonus is 20% higher than the others. I’m just curious how much weight a target bonus holds in everyone’s view since I know it’s not guaranteed and only discretionary.

Personally, a 20% difference in the pre-tax dollar value of a bonus may not be the best way to decide what job you take (I'm assuming this isn't like a 1M vs 800k bonus that is). I would much rather stick with the company that I get along better with (the team/people). All power to you if they also have the higher bonus, but if the culture is shit a 20% bonus may not be worth it

In my situation both teams are great and I like everyone on both ends. The only real difference is prestige. As in the lower pay is the higher prestige company and the higher pay is less prestigious. But I think that discount is too much to work at a more prestigious firm. My only concern is it’s based on a target bonus so then I don’t know if that’s something I should just ignore because it’s discretionary or if it actually should hold weight?

Also depends on sector. I don't really know much about RE, target returns, etc, but maybe look at it from the angle of what you want to do in 5, 10 years from now. Would which firm will help you have a better chance of achieve both goals at work (i.e. if you want to go to PE, etc) and outside of work (house/cottage, nice car, whatever) while also seeing what is most important for you (is it getting that nice WLB in 5 years at a top PE fund with carry, having a nice car in a few years, paying off your mortgage ASAP). I think you should step back, make a list of all your goals and what you prioritize and try and rank each of the companies based on what will check off the most on your list
