Target Status or no?? +Rate my resume

I’m a incoming transfer to Georgetown for spring (from a top STEM school and MBB regional target and national semi- target but a no target for IB) who will be studying economics and government.

  1. Given that SA26 Junior internship recruiting seemingly starts in spring, will I still get the target status of Georgetown or of my old school given I won’t have completed grades from Georgetown and won’t have much club experience by the recruiting peak in April?
  2. Also, given that the SA26 Junior internship recruiting process starts in spring and that I wasn’t part of finance or consulting clubs at my old school (but will be joining them at Georgetown in spring), will not having any/ or very little finance/ consulting clubs on my resume hurt my chances for SA26 MBB/top IB recruiting?
  3. I otherwise think I have a very strong resume: In my freshman year, I interned for Morgan Stanley wealth management. I also took a gap year where I interned for the US House of Representatives and did 2 more internships but in highschool. I also serve on a local governmental committee (the youngest to do so for my city), run 2 other organizations, was in some clubs in my old school (I’ll be joining the finance clubs and consulting clubs this spring) studied abroad at a very prestigious university, and also have done a major finance project (building a complex trading system which made quite a bit of money) which has garnered me an interview on a large financial media platform and on a midsized finance magazine. How competitive/ strong is my resume for MBB/ top IB?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the insights regarding your questions:

  1. Target Status for Georgetown:

    • Recruiting Timeline: Since SA26 Junior internship recruiting starts in spring, you will likely be considered under Georgetown's target status. However, because you won't have completed grades from Georgetown and limited club experience by April, it might be challenging to fully leverage Georgetown's target status immediately.
    • Old School Status: Your old school’s status might still be relevant, especially if you have strong connections or recommendations from there. However, transitioning to Georgetown should ideally provide you with better opportunities given its stronger target status for IB.
  2. Impact of Limited Finance/Consulting Club Experience:

    • Club Involvement: Not having significant finance or consulting club experience from your old school could be a disadvantage. However, joining these clubs at Georgetown in spring will help mitigate this. Active participation and quickly taking on leadership roles can enhance your resume.
    • Resume Impact: While limited club experience might hurt your chances slightly, your other experiences and achievements can compensate for this gap. Focus on highlighting your relevant internships and projects.
  3. Resume Competitiveness for MBB/Top IB:

    • Strengths:
      • Internships: Your internships at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and the US House of Representatives are strong points.
      • Leadership and Projects: Serving on a local governmental committee, running organizations, and your finance project are impressive.
      • Media Exposure: Being interviewed on a financial media platform and a finance magazine adds significant value.
    • Overall Competitiveness: Your resume appears very strong and competitive for MBB and top IB recruiting. Ensure you articulate your experiences well and demonstrate your passion for finance and consulting.

Additional Tips: - Networking: Leverage Georgetown’s alumni network and attend as many networking events as possible. - Recommendations: Secure strong letters of recommendation from your previous internships and any influential contacts. - Resume Presentation: Make sure your resume is well-structured, highlighting your most relevant experiences and achievements prominently.

By focusing on these areas, you can enhance your chances of securing a top internship despite the initial challenges.

From Georgetown. I feel like for most places not even for Georgetown, being at a target school or not doesn't matter at the level of what school goes on your resume, but rather moreso 1) OCR and 2) if you can tap into the alumni pool for networking or not. Honestly I find no reason for Georgetown alums to see you as "inferior" or anything of that sort, especially since Georgetown takes a lot of transfers. Nobody's really gonna give you a hard time just because you transferred in soph spring and if they do, that's very telling of that firm's (or at least that person's/group's) culture...

Now the finance club part may set you back a little. It may be hard to join a finance club during sophomore spring as an incoming transfer. But there have been many smart people who have been able to go to EBs and BBs without joining a single finance club, so I wouldn't say this is going to set you back.

Two purposes of joining a finance club:

  • 1) Show demonstrated interest
  • 2) Tap into the finance club alumni pool (easier to network if you were in the same club)

1) is much more important than 2). If you have had a finance internship, best to put that on your resume. You need to be able to show that you have a demonstrated interest in finance.

Good luck with networking and enjoy the hilltop! Hopefully you'll love it there.
