Thoughts on Building a “Personal Brand” as an A1?

During undergrad I served as a “mentor” in several roles, and I have a passion for helping others. I also see huge upside in building a personal brand.

I love to write and am considering beginning with LinkedIn posts and/or a newsletter. The objective is to provide real value and insights, NOT be an “influencer” or “LinkedIn warrior.”

Thank you for any feedback.

Pros: help people who are in a spot I was once in and build a personal brand.

Cons: seem cringe until the content does well and people (readers) express gratitude in comments/messages.

Part of me thinks it’s ridiculous to even consider not doing this, but the other part understands how this industry can operate. Roles in banking / buyside are coveted, and many people could benefit from more helpful content on interview prep, how to network effectively, how to consider opportunities, etc.

Building a personal brand as an A1 can be a strategic move, especially if done with authenticity and a focus on providing value. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and considerations:

Pros of Building a Personal Brand:

  1. Helping Others: Sharing your experiences and insights on LinkedIn or through a newsletter can genuinely help those navigating the same challenges you once faced. Topics like interview prep, networking, and career decision-making are highly sought after.
  2. Networking Opportunities: A well-crafted personal brand can attract like-minded professionals and mentors, opening doors to valuable connections in banking or the buyside.
  3. Visibility: Consistently posting thoughtful, actionable content can position you as a knowledgeable and approachable professional, which could be beneficial for future career moves.
  4. Long-Term Value: As highlighted in WSO threads, maintaining relationships and staying top of mind is crucial. A personal brand can help you stay relevant and memorable in your network.

Cons and Industry Perception:

  1. Risk of Being Perceived as “Cringe”: The finance industry can be skeptical of public self-promotion, especially if it comes across as insincere or overly polished. However, as noted in WSO discussions, the key is to focus on substance over style. If your content is genuinely helpful, the initial skepticism will fade.
  2. Time Commitment: Balancing the demands of an A1 role with content creation can be challenging. Ensure that your posts or newsletters don’t detract from your primary responsibilities.
  3. Industry Norms: Some WSO users have pointed out that LinkedIn “bragging” can backfire in certain circles. To avoid this, keep your tone professional and your content focused on providing value rather than self-promotion.

Tips for Success:

  1. Start Small: Begin with LinkedIn posts before committing to a newsletter. This allows you to test the waters and gauge the response to your content.
  2. Focus on Value: Share actionable advice, personal anecdotes, and lessons learned. Avoid generic platitudes or overly polished “influencer” content.
  3. Engage Authentically: Respond to comments and messages thoughtfully. Building a personal brand is as much about interaction as it is about content creation.
  4. Consistency is Key: Posting regularly (but not excessively) helps build credibility and keeps you top of mind without overwhelming your audience.
  5. Leverage Your Strengths: If you love writing, let that passion shine through. Authenticity resonates more than anything else.

Final Thought:

As one WSO thread noted, “Your brand will command the presence in the room before you even step in it.” If you approach this with the right intentions and focus on providing real value, the upside far outweighs the potential downsides. Just remember to stay grounded, prioritize your current role, and let your content speak for itself.

As far as a personal brand? I donno. Just work hard and have fun.   Honestly an IB analyst is an IB analyst. Not a lot of differentiation there. the wheat gets separated from the shaft later into VP years.

For right now just survive and have fun.
