Thoughts on Invesco as first job out of undergrad?

Seeking insights into Invesco (London/EU), particularly regarding its reputation as a first job. How are the comp, culture, and prestige perceived by those who work in the industry? Specifically, I'm interested in the private markets side of the business, including direct lending and special situations, as well as the real assets teams. My long-term goal is to transition to the sell-side in a LevFin or M&A role, with the aim of eventually returning to the buy-side at a more specialized private markets fund (as I’m not sure it’s possible from Invesco directly) Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Invesco or Investec?

Wasn't even aware that Invesco did investment banking advisory. I guess they may have a direct lending arm but not seem them on any lbo financing.

Investec lightly better but a pretty shit outfit. Lots of shit Seniors in that place.

Invesco not investec, they do have a private credit fund which I’ll be joining soon. My understanding from speaking to them is that it’s primarily financing LBO’s/ Portcos allbeit at the senior secured level as opposed to other areas of the cap structure.

Ok so for a move to PE or lateral to IB this isn't a great move. You could probably lateral to a corporate banking gig at a bank after but IB is a struggle.

While all experience is good experience, there are better options to get your basis.

Interesting, most of the team come from top BB’s (MS,JPM) and Levfin specifically so I assumed at the very least a lateral move to Levfin was possible. Thanks for your input much appreciated - could I ask your reasoning as to why I wouldn’t be able to lateral to IBD?

My thought process is lateral to the SS in a levfin group and from there go back to the buyside either PE or a top tier PC fund as opposed to the PC arm of an asset manager.

Associate 3 in IB-M&A:

Asset management is the exit op - many from IB land here for a chiller life, but you cannot go to IB or PE from there. You won't have any of the M&A skillset.

That said if you're not set on IB, this is a good job to be in longer-term

Understandable, how about a Levfin group wouldn’t that be more doable? Honestly, what I want right now is optionality - in the future I’d like to move countries/work internationally or even have the ability to switch careers (potentially corp strategy, strategic finance, PE etc) if I want to.

Some people have recommended an MBA but that’s not really a huge thing in London although, I guess it would place me well for MBB where I could then pivot to PE.

You would have a good bit of optionality from this role, it just won't be into IB/PE. IVZ is a top brand and they have lots of internal roles you can shift into, as well as huge global presence. If you want to move globally, a big brand like this is one of the best ways to do it since they regularly move people around locations and intra-company transfers are easy visas (vs trying to move from tiny, local PE shops and needing to go through the visa process on your own)

MBA -> MBB -> PE is not super likely. That move mostly happens at the analyst level, not at ASO/VP level.

Thank you - what kind of options would be open to me later down the line from this role? I also have prior experience (internships) in B4 audit, Fixed Income markets (product specialist focusing on High Yield & IG) and as a research analyst focused infra PE. Both product specialist and research analyst roles were at insurance add on asset managers (think M&G, LGIM, Aviva Investors). I also went to a semi target school (Think Kings, Cass, Nottingham) The roles desc is:

Assisting Analysts / Senior Analysts in the preparation of credit proposals to include company and industry analysis, capital structure analysis, cash flow projections.

Assisting in the on-going monitoring and review of existing transactions, including historical financial analysis, cash flow modelling and projections, industry analysis and assessments and review of internal and external ratings. Building and maintaining quarterly financial projection models.

Assisting in updating ESG analysis / scoring for issuers in porfolios.

Maintaining existing electronic credit files, compliance reports, collateral positions, and updated exposure reports.
