TN Visa → F-1 Visa international targeting IB/S&T/AM — which firms actually sponsor front office roles?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently a freshman at a semi-target school in the US looking to recruit front-office roles (IB primarily, but also open to S&T and AM/WM).
I’m in a somewhat unique situation. I’m currently on a TN visa (canadian citizen), but planning to switch to an F-1 so I can do summer internships on CPT. So, long-term, I’d be following the standard OPT → H-1B path.
I’ve been trying to figure out which firms actually sponsor for front-office roles, and honestly, a lot of what I’ve seen online feels misleading/is contradictory. Many firms are labeled as “sponsors,” but it seems like most of that is for tech/quant roles rather than IB analyst positions.
Would really appreciate blunt/real insight from people who’ve gone through this:
1. Which firms are actually reliable for sponsorship in IB analyst recruiting?
Are BBs (JPM, GS, MS, BofA, Citi) realistically viable for internationals, or is it highly dependent on the group and inconsistent?
2. Are there any firms that are noticeably more international-friendly?
I’ve heard mixed things about Barclays, DB, UBS — not sure if that’s actually true in practice.
3. How different is sponsorship across IB, S&T, and AM/WM?
Is it fair to say S&T and AM are slightly more flexible, or is that overstated?
4. Are elite boutiques basically off the table for internationals at the analyst level?
(Evercore, Lazard, PJT, etc.)
5. If IB sponsorship is too inconsistent, what’s the smartest fallback path?
Would starting in S&T or AM and trying to lateral be a better strategy?
I'm trying to prep for recruiting by starting to network now, but I just wanna make sure my efforts are going towards a firm that will actually hire me full-time. I'd appreciate any advice or insights, especially from people who have recently been through recruiting. Thanks a lot.

How are you on a TN as a student? This doesn’t make sense
well technically TD not TN, ive been living in the US my whole life
Nice to see another Canadian studying in the U.S! Currently at a small bank, I went from TD in high school > F1 in uni > TN working now. Currently applying for H-1B. Generally it’s all the top BBs/EBs, and some MMs are on a case by case basis. Some smaller firms like mine are more flexible with sponsorship/TN too, it’s not that difficult of a process. There’s forums for past recruiting cycles of people saying which firms sponsor so would recommend you start there, I don’t have a full list off the top of my head but it was helpful for me.
Would recommend you declare a STEM major to get the 3 yr STEM OPT, helps you with sponsorship concerns. No idea on S&T and AM, just focus on banking if u like it
i see, thank you for the insight. ill def look into the stem major it seems like a good option. thanks again!
Seconding this as a Canadian who's been here for a while now
