Transition from WM to IBD?

Hello to all,

More and more WSO is becoming my favorite place online. How did I not know about it before is crazy.

Anyways, I need some input from you guys. I've been interning with MS since December at their WM branch down in the South and I was wondering if anyone here have any experience/insights on leveraging such an internship into a position in IBD in NY? It doesn't have to be a full time position, an IBD internship or anything of that matter, basically to get a way in into investment banking.

All inputs are welcome,

Cheers!

good luck is all I can say. I'm in wealth management (won't say the company) in the South and there is virtually no connection between us and IBD. we sometimes interact with capital markets traders but I've been here 3.5 years and couldn't tell you the name of one banker (I know a few traders, but that's it). If you're in a big southern office like Atlanta or Dallas, you've got a shot at meeting some people with influence, but otherwise you will have to go through the process like a non target.

as far as advice, make your intentions very clear to your branch manager and other branch managers from your area (if you've met them). if you tell them what you're trying to do and assuming you've done good work, they should help you out, you never know people's pasts, they could've transitioned from IBD to WM and still could have some contacts.

to summarize: it can be done, but it's difficult.

^^ My thoughts exactly. I have talked to the branch manager, who pretty much said what you have just said. I guess I was just wondering if there were any precedents of such case on WSO...
