Turning a Non-Target University into a Target Capital Markets University
Hi all,
I am from a non-target university in Canada and recently accepted a 2020 Summer IB internship. To give you some context on what recruiting is like over here, it's an accounting heavy focus school with most students placing in back-office finance roles or a big 4. We have 3-4 banks who post with us for IB internships and we don't have a large alumni base for Capital Markets. I know I still have to worry about (keeping up my GPA, getting a full-time offer and crushing the summer etc) but I want to help make the recruiting process easier for younger students at my university. My questions for you are
A) Can a non-target school turn into a target school?
B) Other than students from target schools placing in top positions since the beginning of time, what makes it better than a non-target school?
C) How can a career's office build better relationships with banks or boutique firms to increase the number of job postings offered?
D) We have an internship program, sadly it starts after 3rd year instead of at the beginning like other universities. Should we change our program to a winter structure that begins right after 2nd year to try and place in less competitive times of the year?
Thank you in advance!
A non target school can turn into a semi-target school, then a target. How its been looking at my university:
We had a few people who worked their asses off to get in, IB total. These guys were the real trailblazers, maybe 0-1 from each year. Mostgot in through diversity.
Then they did a great job, helped other students from the school along the way, and got them interviews. This slowly put our school on the radar as we ended up with a bunch of people networking.
A few students who got IB internships got together and started a club to help freshman and sophomore get a head start, teach the finance early, and then helped them network
The first couple of alumni in IB became directors, and started getting us on to core school lists at their banks.
This year we have about the same number of people who got 2020 NY IB summer analyst offers as we have ever had in NY IB total (as in, my class had only had one student besides myself with an IB internship, this year we’ve got more than 15 sophomores with 2020 IB internships across BB, EB, and MM)
Whats interesting is our first few alumni all got into BB’s / EB’s. Its a pretty good feeling when you’re seeing current sophomores able to attend info sessions. I remember my first few networking calls, people outright told me that I would never do investment banking because of where I went school.
We’re still a non-target, but are a core school at a couple of places and are hoping to keep it up
Hey! Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate this information. The "never doing IB due to your school" needs to come to an end, at the end of the day it's the person that matters. Thanks again for the insight on your university.
Out of curiosity, how long did the whole process you outlined take?
I'm afraid for that reply haha, regardless once I graduate hopefully I can keep a strong alumni base who is interested in giving back and helping out 5-10 years down the line.
