UK SA 2026 CV Questions

Hey all,

In the process of refining my CV for UK SA 2026 recruiting and wanted to hear your thoughts on a few points:

  1. I interned at a U.S. government institution way back in 2018 (during my freshman year) as a financial/economic research analyst. The experience was interesting and the brand name is solid, but the internship itself was so long ago that I'm afraid people will consider it weird that I'm still including it in my CV. Should I keep or remove it?
  2. I've worked for ~2.5 years as a generalist IB analyst at a boutique. Prior to that, I interned at the same bank for a full year when I was a senior, receiving a full-time offer. No other internships between the freshman one mentioned above and this one. Given the length of my full-time employment, is there a point in keeping the internship period in my CV, or should I just remove it and dedicate more space to my deal experience?
  3. Having served in my country's military for a year in a combat-ready unit, do I put military experience under work experience or leadership experience, alongside uni extracurriculars like society president etc?

Appreciate any insights!

Here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Freshman Year Internship (2018):

    • If the internship is from 2018 and you now have 2.5 years of full-time IB experience, it’s likely time to remove it. WSO threads emphasize that older, less relevant experiences should be cut as your resume evolves. The focus should be on showcasing your most recent and impactful roles.
    • Exceptions might apply if the brand name is exceptionally strong and adds significant value to your profile, but even then, it’s better to prioritize space for your deal experience or other recent achievements.
  2. Internship at the Same Bank Before Full-Time Role:

    • WSO advice is clear: if you’ve transitioned from an internship to a full-time role at the same bank, you should consolidate the roles under one entry. This avoids redundancy and allows you to dedicate more space to highlighting your deal experience, which is far more critical for SA recruiting.
    • For example, list it as:
      Boutique Investment Bank
      Analyst (Full-Time): [Dates]
      Intern: [Dates]
    • Then, focus the bullet points on your most significant contributions and deal experience.
  3. Military Experience:

    • Military service can be a strong differentiator, especially in leadership-heavy roles. WSO threads suggest placing it under Work Experience if it involved significant responsibilities or leadership.
    • Alternatively, if you want to emphasize leadership qualities, you can include it under a Leadership Experience or Additional Information section alongside extracurriculars like society president roles.
    • The placement depends on how you want to frame the narrative. If the military experience demonstrates skills directly relevant to IB (e.g., teamwork, discipline, leadership), it might be better under Work Experience.

Final Tips:

  • Keep your CV concise and focused on what’s most relevant to the role you’re targeting.
  • Highlight deal experience prominently, as this is what recruiters will prioritize.
  • Avoid cluttering your CV with outdated or less impactful experiences.

Good luck with your UK SA 2026 recruiting!

Anything from 2018 is way too old. Definitely include military experience. The only question is whether you will qualify for many of the UK SA applications, as you might be too senior for them. The majority will be for uni students.
