Unconverted Summer Internship Impact (UK)

I'm sure we all can agree that this year's recruitment cycle was really tough for everyone, but I was wondering if anyone can share how to recover from an unconverted summer internship. For context, I go to a target uni in the UK but am not from a finance background. I interned at a BB in London but due to severe limitations on the team headcount, only 1 out of 4 interns got a FT offer. Though I have tried to explain this in the few interviews I had, everyone seemed to be under the impression that not converting is entirely based on the intern's performance. While this is true in a lot of scenarios, I wanted to know if anyone here has any tips or stories of unconverted summer interns able to find their way back into IB in London.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, recovering from an unconverted summer internship in London is challenging but not impossible. Here are actionable steps and insights:

  1. Address the Non-Conversion Proactively: Be transparent in interviews about the headcount issue. Frame it as a learning experience, emphasizing the skills you gained and how you performed well despite the circumstances. Avoid sounding defensive; instead, focus on what you took away from the internship.

  2. Leverage Your Network: Reach out to contacts from your internship, including mentors, colleagues, and alumni. Politely ask for referrals or insights into other opportunities. Networking is critical in London, especially for candidates with prior BB experience.

  3. Cold Emailing: As highlighted in WSO threads, cold emailing smaller firms, boutiques, or even mid-market banks can open doors. Tailor your emails to express genuine interest in their work and highlight your prior BB experience.

  4. Target Off-Cycle Internships: London has a robust off-cycle internship market. These roles are less structured and often lead to full-time offers. Apply aggressively to these positions.

  5. Strengthen Your Technicals: If interviewers are skeptical about your performance, overprepare for technical questions. Demonstrating strong technical skills can help dispel doubts about your abilities.

  6. Broaden Your Search: Consider roles in related fields like corporate finance, private equity, or consulting. These can serve as stepping stones back into IB.

  7. Persistence and Resilience: Many WSO success stories involve candidates who faced setbacks but kept pushing. Keep applying, networking, and refining your pitch.

Same, just following this thread. Return offers were not optimal across finance for the past SA. Had friends that went to top shops and they had troubles re-recruiting after even with good brand names.
