Unpaid Internship / Background Check Question for IB SA 2025

Incoming SA 2025 here. So on my resume I did an unpaid internship at a search fund but it literally shut down, so there’s no one there that can verify it for me. Do I still have to report this on my background check since it’s unpaid?

Based on previous WSO threads, unpaid internships can still be part of the background check process. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Verification of Unpaid Internships:

    • Even if the internship was unpaid, it can still be subject to verification during a background check. This includes confirming the details listed on your resume.
  2. Documentation:

    • Since the search fund has shut down, you might face challenges in verifying your internship. Offer letters or any form of written communication that confirms your role and responsibilities can be helpful. However, as seen in previous threads, offer letters alone might not always be accepted.
  3. Handling Unverifiable Internships:

    • If you cannot provide verifiable documentation, you might consider not listing the internship on your background check form. Some users have suggested creative solutions, such as explaining the situation honestly if discrepancies arise.
  4. Third-Party Verification:

    • Most banks use third-party verification companies to conduct background checks. These companies typically pull employment information from the resume submitted to the bank or from details you input into their portal.
  5. Potential Solutions:

    • If you decide to include the internship, be prepared to explain the situation and provide any possible documentation.
    • If you choose not to include it, ensure that your resume and background check form are consistent to avoid any red flags.

In summary, while unpaid internships can be part of the background check, the lack of verifiable documentation due to the company's closure might complicate things. Consider your options carefully and prepare to address any potential issues transparently.

If it was on your resume, yeah you prob do, but just put down the email of your manager and if they don’t answer they’ll ask for emails/projects you worked on as proof.
