Upcoming Summer IB Internship Cancelled

Hey guys,

I need y'alls help. I just signed an offer for 2024 Summer IB and today I found out my internship for this summer was cancelled. I included my cancelled internship on my cvs when applying too. I hadn't signed a formal letter for this summer as the internship was set through verbal/emails between me n the firm. How do I go about telling HR at the firm I'll be at next summer about this? Kinda scared rn.

Thanks

Well if it were me, here's what I'd do. Get a copy of the letter or email from the firm notifying you of the cancellation. Send it to the HR department at the other firm, and tell them you disclose this so there would be no confusion when they do your background check. Tell them you are very disappointed and are frustrated this happened, but you are working hard and have several leads for a new internship this summer.

What else can you really do? What if they don't check until they onboard you next year, and then decide it's a problem? You could miss next years recruiting cycle. There are many kinds of people on wall street, and indeed some of them are jerks. But who would really want to tell a kid you just hired for next summer, that you are cancelling their internship for the sole reason that their previous SA was cancelled. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but it's better to be honest and hope they'll be sympathetic. And who knows, maybe they can squeeze you in this year or at least make some calls for you.

This is good advice. My big takeaway here is that the firm really can't get mad at you- they run the risk of things like this happening by choosing to recruit over a year in advance before you've started this summer internship.

I was notified of my cancellation via a meeting—I was told verbally and virtually. I do have emails of my interactions between me and the firm so if I do need to show proof I can bring that up? My plan is to just tell the firm I’ll be at next year that my internship this summer was canceled but I am actively trying to find something new

I would be honest about it and tell them. It will definitely show up in background checks later on anyways and it's better to be proactive than to be caught lying. Previous internships help a lot when it comes to getting an interview. However, rest assured that the firm for SA 2024 is not offering you the position because of your experience. It is an internship and no one expects you to have much experience up front. You will see people with non-finance backgrounds landing SA positions at GS and they wouldn't be able to tell you what EBITDA is if you put a gun to their head.

i dont think its like on cycle and ft recruiting where a firm hired you based on where you work/worked -- it's just a summer internship and they didn't hire you because you were going to do a regional MM sophomore internship this summer. it doesn't make sense for them to rescind a 2024 SA offer for something you had no control over + had minimum impact on your candidacy in the first place.

i agree with the above commenter to just let HR know of what happened and show them proof of the emails and stuff. doubt they care.

I'm in a very similar situation where after I signed for my summer 2024 internship my 2023 internship was rescinded, due to the fact they were expecting me to intern there for both 2023 and 2024, I had that I was incoming to the firm in my resume and I don't really know what to do about it.
