[URGENT] Should I accept this Investment Banking/Family Office position?

I've cold-emailed a billionaire who runs his family office + his own small IB boutique he uses to make financing deals in emerging markets all over the world, mostly real estate and natural resources. He responded and I got an interview with an associate. He was super cool and the interview went great. He invited me to the equivalent of a super day at the end of the week, and wants me to meet juniors, then the senior bankers sourcing those deals all over the world, then the billionaire himself.

In terms of work I told him I'd be interested in the IBD part and he asked me some questions about cash flows etc. He said though that because the boutique is so small, there'd be some MO/BO tasks too and mentioned serving coffee to clients.

Now I don't mind serving coffee to the sheik.

What do you think about it? Assuming I get an offer, I'd have the opportunity to work directly with the billionaire and senior bankers who seem to have super good connections and organize conference calls with clients (CFOs, etc). I don't know about the comp or lifestyle (real IB hours?).

The work seems actually interesting, maybe more than what I'd do at a regular investment bank, and the billionaire is a very cool guy from what I've heard. Being a final year student, I don't have so much time to try things out. My only fear is my ability to lateral afterwards, as I'd like to move to regular IBD later on.

Any senior bankers here to give me their opinion on this? I see two options

  • SA billionaire's boutique -> network -> get a FT offer at a BB or EB (I'd like a shiny name on my resume)
  • SA + FT 1 year billionaire's boutique -> network -> BB/EB FT

If anything, given the small nature of the firm, you'll probably get some good dealflow under your belt. I'd definitely go for it if you have nothing else in the pipeline.

This is the kind of opportunity that takes you further than just the shitty world of IB. Having a billionaire & their family office in your rolodex is incredibly valuable, and I'm sure you'll get at least decent experience in terms of the work itself.

I can neither confirm nor deny, as I've already given a lot of information, but I can tell you that it is unlikely that my profile or environment differs much from yours. I just have some niche knowledge.

Hey there mate - non-target, non-diversity, international student here. Two SD's at BB's through pure networking, no offers received. Was wondering if you could shed some light on how you got the emails of these family offices?

I work with someone who went this route and you should 100% do it.

"Do you want to be my bitch, turns into wanna by my bitch that knows finance to wanna be my bitch on these deals, to wanna run these deals?"

Obviously the big caveat is make sure you don't suck. Short of a MS / Goldman offer absolutely DO NOT go the cookie cutter route at some fuck all boutique because "it fits the mold"
