US IB Internships (Pre-Masters) - Do they even exist?
Hi all,
Looking for insights on non-traditional U.S. IB recruiting.
Profile
- ~2 years Fortune 500 corporate finance (FP&A / commercial finance)
- Admitted to a Tier-1 European business school (starting Fall 2026)
- 29 Y.O., U.S. citizen, currently Europe-based but can relocate to the U.S. quickly
Question
Before starting the my degree (its like a 0-2 years experience baby-MBA at a T1 European School), is it realistically possible to land a U.S.-based investment banking internship (off-cycle / pre-school) at:
- a decent middle-market firm, or
- an IB-adjacent role (M&A advisory, capital markets, corp dev with deal exposure)?
I’m aware most U.S. IB internships are undergrad-targeted, which is why I’m asking candidly:
- Do firms consider profiles like mine (currently un-enrolled, looking for experience before postgrad).
- Whats the best way to go about it? cold-emailing?
- If it is feasible, what type of firm or role is most realistic?
Just trying to understand whether this is a viable use of time pre-school.
Appreciate any blunt insight.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Pre-Masters U.S. IB internships are rare but not impossible, especially for someone with your profile. While most U.S. IB internships are structured for undergraduates or MBA students, there are off-cycle and boutique opportunities that could align with your goals. Here's how to approach it:
1. Feasibility of Landing an Internship
2. Challenges
3. Best Approach
4. Realistic Targets
5. Action Plan
Final Thoughts
While it's not the most common path, landing a pre-Masters IB internship in the U.S. is possible with the right strategy. Focus on boutiques, middle-market firms, and IB-adjacent roles, and use your FP&A experience as a differentiator. Cold-emailing and networking will be your most effective tools. If successful, this experience could significantly strengthen your profile for post-Masters recruiting.
