Value of working on landmark transactions
How valued is it to work on landmark transactions ? Say you’ve you’ve worked on the top 5 M&A / IPO / RX deal of the year in your geography, how much of an advantage does that give you within your firm, with future clients/colleagues, or with recruiters ? Is it so much better to work on a $20bn deal than a $1bn deal?
What matters first and foremost is your experience. Ideal profile is to work on a variety of deals (privates, publics, small-cap, large-cap, etc.) on both sides (buy- and sell-side).
What matters more is your ability to sell your experience.
So if you've done $100bn of deals but can't articulate the lessons and nuances in a way that resonates with 25 different C-Suite execs at 25 different companies facing 25 diff situations, then you get "less" than if you did $10bn of deals but you saw a lot of interesting situations and dynamics along the way.
