What are the expectations of an intern with prior experience?
As above. I interned as a penultimate year student as a Summer Analyst at a BB within a product group. Returning again this year to intern as a Summer Analyst within another product group in Capital Markets at the same bank. Are there going to be additional expectations on me to get the return offer? Anything I should be doing to perform close to the Analyst level this time around?
Thank you!!
The exact same as before. There won't really be additional expectations. If you got the return offer for this summer, just do what you did last time.
Oh ok thanks. I just thought there may be higher expectations bcos ik that some of the Europeans with prior experience went above and beyond and got returns. Hopefully if I just continue with good soft skills, and nail PPT & Excel again I should be good to get the return offer?
Unless your group is slaughtering interns this year, that should be enough. You should just work to the best of your ability, but don't kill yourself over small things. Also don't come off as a hardo. Person at my place got cut for that.
Ok sounds good! Thanks
re. the hardo thing, is it ok to grab seniors to learn about the low level stuff surrounding the product? Like the currency a bond is issued in and stuff like that? I'm coming from a non-finance background (econometrics) so didn't study anything like that at uni and am keen to understand to a good level of everything for my own development and presentation
It's fine to drop in every once in a while and just talk in general. Asking conceptual questions and the stuff. I absolutely would not pull aside a senior to ask them the "currency a bond is issued in." It's fine asking an analyst that stuff. In general, I wouldn't pull seniors aside. It's fine to have a chat with them once every while though
You have several months to learn before you start as well.
Oh ok... In my previous team the seniors were always very happy to explain in detail the product (and encouraged us to ask questions).
I just mean the question you specifically mentioned seemed pretty basic to pull someone aside for. It's different if you're already talking to them.
I think he means it’s fine to ask them questions, but ask them things that aren’t readily available through other resources (in a capital markets team you would just be able to pull a bond up on bloomberg to see the currency it’s issued in)
when I was an intern I was encouraged to walk in from time to time and chat with seniors. But try not to ask things that have yes/no or one word answers
for example, based off what you mentioned above—maybe you could instead ask the rationale for the corporate to issue the bond in that domicile vs. USD or EUR. If you see what I mean
The same. There were some people I interned with that did sophomore internships at the firm. The bar for interns is not high.
