What division at my current internship would put me in the best position for IB?

Hi Guys.

Bit of background, don't need to read all of it and skip down to the bullet points. I just finished up my freshman year and I've been at my internship for nearly 4 months now. (I managed my internship and studies). A lot of teams at my firm are interested in getting me to work for them because a lot of people take well with me. My manager has said to me I'm in a good position to request whatever department to move to and that will most likely happen. There was an opening for an underwriting intern not long ago and I was tempted to apply, I asked my manager and she said to wait it out and finish my current stint with her team before moving. I probably could have moved before my current contract ends with her team, but I wanted to repay the faith in her backing me for the internship and I don't want to burn down any bridges.

Now the firm I work at is an Insurance firm, I currently do invoice processing and just a lot of admin stuff with our polices. I feel like I haven't really learnt much relevant to finance, but it's a good start and I'm very thankful for my internship and the opportunities I get here. I also believe a current Goldman analyst was an intern here a few years ago so I guess I'm on the right path. I'd love to work in IB some day and that's the plan, I know I won't get an IB internship straight out from this internship but I want to be strategic about it and build my CV. Out of the following divisions what do you think will look best for future IB recruiting?

  • Underwriting (basically doing a lot of data entry and helping out evaluating the financials of potential clients)

  • Special Risks/claims (dealing with distressed companies and working with administrators. Somewhat similar to Underwriting but seems a bit more boots on the ground and people orientated then underwriting)

  • New Business/Business development (More the sales side of our firm, dealing with brokers more I guess and doing more people orientated stuff)

  • Finance department (Probably seems the most obvious on paper but I don't think there are many people willing or able to help me with finance. Not too keen on what they do, similar to a lot of stuff I do day to day)

Thank you!
