Going off the other post about cringy Linkedin stuff, I still have not managed to find a single post on Linkedin that wasn't completely unnecessary. For me, I see motivational BS, humblebragging about their summer internships, and openly bragging about getting an SA offer. And don't get me started on the "Incoming ______" which just ticks me off. It's spread to college acceptances too, I recently saw a freshman who wrote "Incoming M&T".....
So WSO, what do y'all use Linkedin for? Would it even be worthwhile to keep mine or should I just delete it cause it's useless?
I just update it as needed and check to see if I have messages every couple weeks or so.
In your experience, do people actually message you/use the message function in Linkedin? Every single one I get is some auto message from a recruiter/bot.

I get contacted quite lot by recruiters on LinkedIn. I got the advice to write a very good, very good CV and then use that as my LinkedIn profile in order to get the best results in networking. I am assuming that made a difference.
I also use LinkedIn to network and I have gotten my last two jobs through networking on LinkedIn to get interviews - on that note, I also got interviews with all MBB firms through networking on LinkedIn. Again, writing a very good CV / LinkedIn profile was key.
Fuck networking with some 45 year old fuck who doesn't even know his wife cheats on him with the pool boy, can't use windows 10 and can barely walk to work before coughing out his lungs.
Hear me out , get laid through linked in. You meet smart , educated girls who are as power hungry, shallow, greedy and competitive as you. Sounds like a pretty solid choice for filtering out the basic broads and the smoke-shows.

lol honestly i just use it for research purposes .I look at alumni who are have interned at an investment bank or are currently working at one to see where we place the most . I noticed that there is a strong alumni presence at BAML and a solid amount at GS & Evercore.
It doesn't make sense wanting to work for JPM if barely any alumni work there. I would say it is a great tool to increase your chances at an internship by knowing which banks to apply for and targeting those instead of all the BB AND EB. I mentioned that our alumni have a strong presence in BAML so when i eventually have a chat with those who work there I can understand the culture ,the type of deals that they currently work on and why BAML in greater detail due to more opinions and personal experiences.
Lol not gonna lie I would love to hear stories of dudes pulling from LinkedIn, I know I would’ve tried for sure in my younger days

Find info/background on buyers in a process, get privately owned company leadership to target for a pitch, find the right person to reach out to for a deal in a biz dev function at a F500, get a list of 30 - 50 people who work at an office you want to work at, reach out for phone calls.

Develop a bank of people I'd reach out to for a new opportunity, and gauge the job market.
Fantasizing that some GS/JPM recruiter will contact me through inMail. I check it every day believing that one day will be the special day
I use it mainly to: 1. Gauge the job market since I'm planning a lateral in 2020. 2. Cry when a bank/person I would be interested in reaches out and says they're looking for someone and would love to chat, since that literally never happened to me in college 3. See what people I kinda knew back in the day are up to 4. Mainly to respond to awful recruiting agencies who pitch me jobs in like compliance and fucking IT telling them that I am actually dead and that they should stop messaging the account

Agreed on #3 and #4. I also use LinkedIn to promote our services since I am connected to a lot of business owners and investors, find target management team members who have impossible-to-find e-mails or other contact info, maintain some level of professional support (congratulating others on a new job or work anniversary - it sounds cheesy, but it's a great way to stay in their faces/on top of mind), and lastly, find potential careers I may be interested in, though I think I have settled and will do my own thing next. But I will say LinkedIn wasn't bad for the job circuit when I did use it for that.
yeah they do need to step it up next season. I did like the range rover episode and the mac dance a lot but beyond that it was a pretty slow season. needs more dennis tbh, show is just not as good without him
This what I use it for. I really use it for job hunting too. Hell I don't even have a profile picture on it. I just can't take it serious these days. Meanwhile one of friends is on it 24/7, constantly updating it, checking his profile stats, etc. It's cheese dic to me.
Filter for people I want to cold email from firms that I am interested in. Oh, and to figure out who I never want to associate with because they constantly post fucking ridiculous Oscar Award speeches for negligible accomplishments.

It's a good way for corp dev recruiters to notice you. Unfortunately, you do have to filter out a lot of BS position, though.
I do not post on linkedin "incoming" "I am so happy to receive a full time offer". I do use it for a very simplified resume. I recruiter wants to see what I about they can find me on linkedin and see my education, past placements with very simple bios. "accounting and analytics intern", "IBD M&A"...... thats why I use I agree everyone with incoming or boosting there shit. Relax post it a week in it will feel better.
Of 3 internships and 2 FT jobs - 3 came directly from LinkedIn recruiting messages including my current position. So there is definitely value in maintaining a current profile IMO. I think the reality though is as you climb the ladder of “elite-ness” the possibility of getting a look from a role you actually want decreases significantly and the BS messages from Joe Blow Inc. rise significantly. I use it to look at interviewers past experiences before I go in and I like it to stay connected professionally to people I would not be comfortable connecting with on Facebook.
So as a student it's near imperative to have one, but as a professional less so?
I’d say required as a student but anything useful will have to come from the students efforts. As a professional just entering the workforce it’s most helpful because recruiters will come to you - and hopefully have some good opportunities. But as your career progresses it becomes less helpful as the vast majority of these jobs become less appealing

In the LMM I use the employee count as a gauge for the company's size.
I don't use FB, Twitter, or Instagram, so I use it to keep up-to-date with several news sources (not Business Insider) and to keep up with friends from high school and college. Beyond that, I may look at jobs out of curiosity, but spend too much time on it and I find it just becomes another FB.

Yeah I feel like most social media is a status thing. LinkedIn definitely has the potential to be, as comically described in the other post. But at the same time, having a professional profile (with a professional picture) especially as a student, can certainly add credibility in recruiting. I only have experience with smaller firm recruiting, but every preliminary phone call I had, I’d get the notification the recruiter or person I was speaking with had checked out my profile. It’s not perfect, but LinkedIn can be useful, especially having the Premium version (not sure if it’s worth $30/month), but at least use the free month they give you.
