What does it take to get a BB Superday?
For Summer Analyst*
Everyone’s talking about grinding techs and matter-of-factly talking about superdays
But I’m wondering, how’s everyone so sure they’ll get one? Is the bar that low? Is being at a target school and having 1-2 relevant internships enough?
From someone who doesn’t have any family in the industry to guide them
Based on the most helpful WSO content, getting a BB Superday for a Summer Analyst position is no walk in the park, but it's achievable with the right strategy. Here's what it typically takes:
Networking: This is crucial. Many candidates secure superdays by building strong connections with bankers through coffee chats, alumni networks, and consistent follow-ups. Networking can help you get noticed and referred, which is often the first step to landing an interview.
Relevant Experience: Having 1-2 relevant internships (even at smaller firms like boutiques or Big 4) can demonstrate your interest and capability in finance. It’s not just about the name of the firm but being able to speak to your experiences and what you learned.
Target School Advantage: Being at a target school can help you get your foot in the door, as these schools often have established pipelines to BBs. However, this doesn’t guarantee a superday—it just increases your chances of getting an initial interview.
Technical and Behavioral Prep: While networking gets you in the door, your performance in HireVue or first-round interviews determines if you make it to the superday. You need to be well-prepared for both technical questions (valuation, accounting, etc.) and behavioral questions (fit, teamwork, why IB).
Hustle and Persistence: Non-target candidates or those without family connections often succeed by outworking others. This means reaching out to 20+ bankers, practicing interviews rigorously, and showing genuine interest in the role.
Fit and Personality: Superdays often emphasize "fit." Bankers want to work with people who are personable, team players, and can handle the demanding nature of the job. Being well-spoken, humble, and enthusiastic can set you apart.
Remember, the bar isn’t "low"—it’s competitive. But with the right mix of networking, preparation, and persistence, you can secure a superday even without industry connections. I don't think everyone is so sure they'll get one, nor is "the bar that low" - it's that it's better to be prepared earlier if you do get one than to panic and cram on short notice
