IBD analyst here so I can share my thoughts, people may disagree but I guess stress differs for each individual. I think it mainly comes down to two key points A) the short deadlines and B) managing multiple workstreams/projects. I expand on these below:

  • Lack of notice on work and short deadlines: seniors always ask for too much work in too little notice (when a senior says this shouldn't take you longer than 20 minutes, it's actually a 2-hour job, sometimes longer and they think you're just being slow or when they say a quick 5-minute job it's actually a 30+ minute job). Also the lack of notice and short deadlines usually means you will have to cancel your Thursday night plans to work through the night to get something done for the deadline, which becomes even more stressful when you know it's nothing that adds value; the lack of respect for juniors, you will often get given work on a Friday afternoon that is due for next week (sometimes as early as Monday) that will require you to cancel any weekend plans and work during the weekend
  • Multiple projects you have to manage and stay on top of (you could have an M&A pitch happening and a live M&A/ECM deal at the same time)
  • The lack of guidance and clarity on work, seniors love to just be unclear and say things like 'please fix' or 'have a go' which is incredibly stressful trying to think how to do something when you're still a junior (although this can be good in a way to get you thinking rather than doing what you're told). Also, sometimes their comments are difficult to read so you spend hours trying to read comments that just end up saying something dumb like '..change to say 'additionally' instead of 'also'..' or something annoying like 'please can you add a slide on X' which will take you hours to do and add no value to the pitch.
  • Politics of managing your relationships with seniors as at the end of the day, they're the ones deciding if you get promoted and a bonus
  • Favoritism in general and towards girls, senior MDs always flirt and sometimes they might even go 'easy' on girl bankers because they think they have a shot at sleeping with them one day, they'll give them good bonuses, not trouble them with useless work so they can leave the office early and invite them to events.. all while male bankers sit back and watch the girls get flirted with whilst the guys put their 300th logo on the slide.
  • Hours: this sort of comes under / is a result of the first two or three points but the lack of sleep and long hours really elevates your stress levels and sometimes a mid level/senior banker might come out with some bullshit like ' it's the rite of passage, every junior needs to do long hours and cancel plans, I did the same when I was a junior '

If any MDs see this, please share with your fellow senior bankers and help create change to improve the culture of banking.

My first week I was staffed on a big pitch so a 3rd year can focus on a live deal. The md wrote his comments in cursive and on a few slides I thought he wrote “Love this” so I was like sweet, no changes. Turns out he wanted me to kill parts of 10 sides and replace it with another slide. Had the 3rd year working until 5am for 3 days trying to fix my fuck up

Agree on all your points besides the “girls treatment”. As a woman in banking, it has been the opposite - guys get the boys club treatment and clear favoritism is shown towards deals they’re put on and higher bonuses end year. Not saying that what you are mentioning doesn’t happen, but women have to deal with so much more than delivering high quality work such as proving ourselves and trying to fit in a frat culture (in most banks/groups)

Funniest

Expectation of perfection to the point of stupidity. Ex. miss a period at the end of a footnote and your associate will act like you just tried to burn down the bank.
