What should I do as a 2nd semester engineering sophomore?

Hello WSO. I'm a sophomore going into my second semester. I study mechanical engineering at a target school with a 3.8 GPA. My interest in it has seriously waned, and since I've always had an interest in trading, I'm looking to get into S&T (or IBD, though it's not trading). I'm gonna stick with this major as a backup career-wise, but otherwise I really want to get into finance.

So far I'm applying to some of the BB fly in programs, INROADS, and MLT (I qualify for diversity). I did apply to SEO but they told me it's already pretty late for summer 2019. After reading a bunch of threads here, my summer 2019 game plan for the next couple of weeks is to find Boutique banks and F500 corporate finance internships in my hometown and collegetown. I'll search if the places have alumni from my school and contact them first to network. And in the meantime, I'll improve my technicals and behaviorals.

Is this a good game plan to put myself in the best position for summer 2020 recruiting? I'm not sure what else to do. As far as experience, last summer I did an REU (science research internship). I am in the investment club at my school and have done valuations work, but that's about it.

Thanks for reading, and I'll appreciate all the help I can get!

Get finance qualifications on your resume such as financial modeling bootcamps, Bloomberg certification, and like you’re doing boutique or Corp Dev / finance internships. This will be crucial to prove you know how to do the work since you’re an engineering major. Honestly though having your gpa in engineering will be a huge boost for you, it validates you’re smart
