WHAT THE F#@$ IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?????????????????

Scene:

I come out of doctor's office at 315 on Wednesday and check my cell phone message. (Been job hunting like a madman for months now)

"1 new message......Hey Will, this is XXXX XXXXXXX from Bulge Bracket recruitment, I've received your resume, and wanted to speak to you about an opportunity here. My number is....."

I scramble home, race through the door and immediately call her... No answer. So i leave a brief, polite message.

Thursday:

I call at 10am and 2pm and 5pm (no answer, no messages)

Friday:

I call at 11am, 330pm and 530pm (no answer, message after last call)

Today:

I call at 945 am, no answer (leave message).

I get her email address through a buddy at BB at 10 am, email her, no response as of yet.

so that's 8 calls and an email...NO RESPONSE.

AND

SHE

F$#%^ING

CALLED

ME.

UNDOUBTEDLY when she does call she'll say, "o, too bad we couldn't touch base sooner, that position has been filled."

HOW DO PEOPLE MAINTAIN SANITY WHEN DEALING WITH HR PEOPLE??

PLEASE GOD IN HEAVEN HELP ME.

I had one BB reject me for an interview about a month after I applied. Then a week later they send an e-mail saying it was an error and they wanted to interview me, would I log on to select a timeslot if I wanted one. I had already gotten an offer I was happy with by that point so I didn't sign up for an interview. Then the next day I get 3 missed calls from their HR in the middle of the day (gee, you think I might be in a lecture or something) wanting to know why I hadn't replied to their e-mail or called them.

I literally think their attention spans are like 1-2 days long at the most.

You have to keep in mind that generally speaking, HR groups are brimming with retards.

After getting offers at my first-choice targets, I recall receiving a follow-up voicemail from a first-round that I'd had with another BB, which invited me to a superday and requested that I follow up via email. I emailed the woman back and politely explained that while I appreciated the opportunity, I had already taken an offer with another firm. Two days later, I got a reply email from the woman that explained in full detail what my schedule, travel arrangements and other logistics would be for my upcoming superday - she even thanked me for emailing her to "confirm" I would be attending. I sort of felt like an asshole, but I basically emailed her back and tried to explain, as politely as one can, that she clearly didn't read the actual content of my original email.

You would think that if they weren't looking for smart HR girls, they should at least be able to find much more attractive ones.

I have also had experiences with HR being at best unresponsive, and at worst downright rude. They are always impossible to get in touch with, and refuse to return calls.

I interviewed with a bunch of firms this fall, and resume dropped at others. After I received the offer I ended up taking, I called around to HR departments to inquire as to the status of my application. I left polite and brief messages requesting they call me as soon as they could, as I needed to discuss my application.

Most returned my call a week or so later, after I had already accepted my other exploding offer - and were shocked that I hadn't informed them that they needed to rush my application....

There were also many other stories of HR phone tag along the way.

- Capt K - "Prestige is like a powerful magnet that warps even your beliefs about what you enjoy. If you want to make ambitious people waste their time on errands, bait the hook with prestige." - Paul Graham

HR people vary. Some of mine were completely incompetent, but others started in the industry (as IB etc analysts) and moved over for lifestyle.

My personal feeling after going through recruiting is that firms will use HR as a whipping boy. For example, HR calls you, tells you that you didn't get an interview. An hour later, someone cancels at that bank and HR comes back and says "oh we fucked up, you actually did get an interview."

If they aren't calling you back, it either means that they forgot (very possible) or they are waiting for a more desirable candidate to get back to them first (also very possible). If the other guy accepts, they'll call you back, saying there's been a mistake etc. otherwise you'll get the slot.

Just my view.

smuguy's situation just proves their stupdity. I once had someone from HR call me back, they didnt say what bank they were form, I olitely ask on the phone....they hesitated and said "uh....(long pause)..."

then I try to recall the HR nubmers (sadly I do this before the HR person can remeber where SHE WORKS) and say "Bear Stearns correct?".... it was sad to say the least and the rest of the convo was even more stupider....

Yeah totally agree with what people said about HR being incompetent. Last year I got a call from a BB, asking "is this the phone number for (my name)?" I say yes and she asks, "Has anyone called you yet?" Puzzled, I replied no. That's when she said, "Oh, ok. Well, I just want to let you know that...you have an offer." So this is how they treat people they actually give offers to...

Just wait until you interact with them regularly once you start. I recommend avoiding them as much as possible.

If you ever have an interpersonal conflict or some kind of serious trouble arises, take it to an MD because they're the only ones who can actually do something about it. Everyone I know who has gone to HR first has ended up getting burned and in a worse position afterwards.

When I just couldn't get along with this Associate (actually no one could, but I was the first to complain properly) I went to my MD and the problem went away. No, he wasn't fired, I just stopped working with him. Someone else tried to complain about him and went to HR first and nothing was accomplished. In fact this guy quit a month or so later out of frustration.

Lesson: never go to HR because at best they're incompetent and powerless and at worst they can screw you over.

"I literally think their attention spans are like 1-2 days long at the most."

You have to keep in mind they are calling/emailing hundreds of candidates daily. It's possible to fuck up here and there.
