What’s the best place to start for investment banking?

Hi, I’m a freshman in college and am majoring in finance. My dream after college is to work somewhere in finance and ideally in IB. What’s the best place to start to try and break into IB? Is there a book or certain course I should buy? Open to all suggestions. Thanks.

i can tell that you are new to this website -- just browse it for a couple of days and you should have a pretty good sense of what to do in terms of recruiting going forward. I also recommend reading mergers and inquisitions website and street of walls website. both extremely helpful when it comes to breaking in.

even then, you should be trying googling this first to see what comes up on WSO or even on reddit; it is a bad habit to ask "stupid questions" directly in this industry so just letting you know.

Not sure if you’re at a target or non-target so I will tailor it like you from an non-target like I am. I recruiting for banking now and have been pretty successful.

  1. Get straight As, before you have any experience this is how employers for your first couple internships will judge you. You may not need a 4.0 but it will never hurt.
  1. Join any type of finance / investment club that your school offers, it will be full of older people at your school who already have or are recruiting for banking offers they will ultimately give you the best advice.
  1. Take on leadership roles in multiple clubs and organizations. At this stage before your first internship you want to have some type of experience to speak to and leading a club is a great way to start.
  1. Land something for freshman / sophomore summer. I landed a gig at a search fund that was basically unpaid but I learned a ton and am able to leverage that in future interviews. The lack of income I made for one summer will more than be made up for in the future, I also met a mentor who has helped me immensely.
  1. Network early and often, it’s something you have to get used to and comfortable with if you want to break into IB, I probably wouldn’t start cold emailing as a freshman but once you have some experience start building those connections during your sophomore summer ideally.
