What's the Deal?

One of the things that strikes me the oddest about IB to date (career switcher, pls flame me) is how awful many of the senior bankers treat the juniors. Ignoring "good mornings" when you see them, generally avoiding knowledge of the existence of anyone lower than VP.

What gives? I've worked in competitive environments before (e.g., consulting) and this was never the case. How are these people who are supposed to be going out, building relationships and winning business so socially inept as to believe that sort of behavior is okay?

There is one MD on the floor who is great to the juniors. Naturally, he brings in a lot of business. I don't think it's a coincidence.

What are your thoughts? Not complaining or saying I need a "hello" to get by, it just strikes me an odd contradiction that those expected to win business through relationships (and being somewhat pleasant) can be so outright rude to people they're in the office with day after day.
