When firms ask you if you've applied there in the past, what are they trying to achieve/ask?

I'm just curious as to why firms would want to ask if you've applied/interviewed there previously? Would they dock you if you didn't perform well? Is it only for reference purposes? Do they want to see what roles you've applied for in the past? Why would they want to pull up your past applications?

I'd greatly appreciate it if y'all would help me with the questions. Thanks!

I think it's so they can go chat to the people who interviewed you last time and check their feedback. If you had negative feedback last time they won't waste time and drop you (happened to a friend of mine last year going for Rothschild). If you didn't have bad feedback but there was just that othrr guy they preferred more last time, then it's fine. Just my 2cts
