Which internship is better?

So next summer, i know it is kind far away but I am just trying to get stuff settled, I have 2 internship offers provided that I make goods grades and etc. I am a freshman this yea. In terms of future career development, which one is better?

  1. Working for a hedge fund in NYC

  2. Working for a international business development/marketing company in BEIJING. pay is high by Chinese standards, housing allowance in Beijing and a chance to watch the olympics.

So any ideas? i am leaning towards the Beijing offer but then again, I am not sure...

If your sole goal is to take a job in investment banking, work at the hedge fund. Its more applicable.

But you will probably be able to get an investment banking job anyway if you just get a finance job the next summer and than a summer analyst role the summer after that. If you care about anything beyond getting an ib job when you graduate, go to China.

hedge fund- over a billion in mangement. pay-$14-16 a hour, most likely grunt work +whatever interns do...small company though 10 staffs?

beijing offer- european company, 6,000 RMB a month, which is like 850 USD a month, 40 hour weeks, plus housing reimbursement up to 2000 RMB a month and travel reimbursement up to 7000 RMB total (air tickets(), offical title "assistant marketing mangaer- northern china operations" = intern/assistant to the mangaer guy

At either one you'll be doing a ton of bitch work due to your lack of experience as a freshman. However, I think an international internship will add a lot more in terms of your life experiences. Beijing would probably be a ton of fun and you'd get to learn all about the city and culture.

One caution: If you're asian, take the hedge fund. I know this may sound strange, but I've screened many resumes of chinese students who had internships in Shanghai or wherever and it just isn't that impressive. An american embracing a completely different culture where (s)he probably doesn't fit in at all is much more appealing than someone who is probably quite familiar with the country and customs due to exposure to family and friends. The same thing holds true for an american student living in Beijing that decides to go to the U.S. for a summer to work.
