Which skills must you have for Investment Banking/Investment Management

So reading these forums and speaking with numerous people makes it clear that the more sophosticated your major (physics, mathematics, ect), the higher proability you have getting a great opportunity in investment banking/investment management.

However, do you really use these sophisticated skills on the job?

We all know personal qualities can't really be tought in academia, but what courses MUST you know well in order to be a good employee at an investment bank/PE/HF?

By the way, I'm referring to skills you have right after graduation - not after a 2 year stint in IBD or something.

Accounting?

Finance? corporate finance?

Valuation and modeling courses (undergrad b schools offer this)?

Econometrics?

Calc 1, 2 3?

Intermediate/advanced economic theory courses (micro and macro?)

Studying as an undergrad, I read as many books as possible. I'm wondering however how I can beef up my knowledge of certain things while in college to improve the likelihood I'll be a good employee. Mostly, people tell me the technical skills will be taught once you're in an Investment Bank/PE/HF, and that your drive and intelligence (ability to learn) is more important of the bat. TRUE?

THANKS!

Haha I've heard that also!

In terms of the things I listed above though, do they teach most of this to you or are you expected to know it?

Things you should know coming in the door...(basic)

1) Accounting 101

2) CFA Level 1 (helpful but not all of it is necessarily applicable)

3) Excel formulas, shortcuts, navigation etc. - unless you want to learn this under an EXTREME amount of pressure

4) The ability to JO&C at a moment's notice to relieve stress (no lube)
