Why Getting Asked to Leave My IB Internship Was the Best Thing That Happened to Me

Hey everyone,

If some of you remember, I'm @holymacaroni, the one who posted about being asked to leave my IB internship this summer. I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for the immense support, both here and on the Instagram post—it truly meant a lot.

Though I was in a pretty rough spot when I wrote that, it turns out that leaving the field was the best thing that could've happened. I took the summer to heal and ended up rediscovering the career path I truly want to pursue after graduation (spoiler: it's not finance or accounting!). I also unearthed a lot about my past that I'm now using to help others who may be going through similar struggles.

I’ve started a podcast called Eclipse of Thought (available on Spotify and all other platforms) where I share my story bit by bit. It's hard to open up, and I'll likely never delve into the deepest detail, but I can hit the surface as the episodes continue.

In the episode titled "4B," (surviving C-PTSD and a BPD parent, almost dropping out of school, etc.), I talk about the chaos leading up to my internship earlier that year, and provide more context on how tough things really were up to that point. Since then, I’ve made the decision to go fully no contact with my parents and life has been pretty great. :D That said, I do still live with some anxiety until I can fully change my first & last name and sever any remaining ties.

I’m aware that my parents may find the podcast and react in their own ways, but at this point, I’m not living in complete fear. My focus is on helping others. I also post random stuff/topics in between because I like building a community that isn't just focused on heavy things :)

Not sure if it's cool to share this here, but I know some of you asked for updates. If you're interested, feel free to check out the podcast for weekly updates as I continue navigating life. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Not trying to be that guy, but it’s honestly wild to see people supporting this.
There are people who would’ve killed for that opportunity and you walked away from it. I am not saying you have to be some hardo and stay in finance forever or even return to whatever firm it is after your internship but what you did is selfish and kinda odd......I hope people don't take your advice.

I clicked the link, and it looks like the podcast is gone too. Seems like you quit that as well.

If you want to quit, that’s your choice. But please don’t try to glorify it.
Breaking into this industry changes lives, especially for people from underprivileged backgrounds who had to fight for every inch.

For anyone revisiting this:
If you commit to something, see it through.

If it’s a 10-week internship, stay the full 10 weeks.
If it’s a two-year analyst program, give it at least a year.

Not giving it a real shot and getting fired in the first couple of weeks into an internship isn’t some bold decision-it’s just lazy.

Agreed. Why are people so soft? You are not the only person in the world who has a story and had some fucked up childhood. I deal with it and do my job. What happened to society glorifying stupidity and laziness. This reminds me of OF models or social influencers. Get a real job. No one cares.
