Why is finance so hypocritical when it comes to fitness?
Industry folk say they prefer fit and healthy guys and gals. But when you're eating crap meals with seamless almost every day it becomes much harder. Plus going to gym sacrificed valuable sleep time, which is in shortage due to how many hours we work.
Why is it assumed everyone has to eat crap meals? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I eat plenty of fast food, but that’s cause I’m lazy and sometimes I just want a burger, not cause healthy food is unobtainable. There are like a million healthy-ish takeout options within walking distance of my office that don’t take any longer to pick up than McDonalds or whatever.
Super analysts would know how to not stress eat, sleep little and run 7 miles at 6am followed by some lifting to be at desk by 9am
If you're on enough adderall and caffeine and riddled with the requisite amount of anxiety to be a stud analyst, you wont have an appetite and stay thin
Think about the guy that manages to stay in shape while working in an environment that is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle, the discipline it takes to carve out gym time despite the grueling schedule, and the type of dedication it would take to get in his healthy meals despite the temptation and convenience to eat like shit. That's damn near superhuman willpower, perseverance, and dedication. Wouldn't you want that guy on your team?
finance people are just generally hypocritical
Idk bro but I'm getting jacked and cashing checks. Can’t say much about my job tho
1) No one is forcing you to spend $40 on greasy Chinese food and fried egg rolls every night. There's plenty of salad / light sandwich / grilled food spots. You just don't order from them.
2) even if you have one bender week, I'm hard pressed to believe you can’t pick 3 days to get an hour of movement in. (Particularly easier on Friday / Sat / Sun). That's up to your lack of discipline and complacency - not to your sweaty group.
I'm at one of the considered sweatiest group and can sneak an hour 4-5x a week. Either 7AM or around dinner hour. There are people in my group who are in running clubs, go hiking every weekend (killer workout btw), etc. If fitness is a priority in your life you will make time for it.
Spent a few (~10) years in the industry (BB, PE, credit): never really worked out (hate it) and always been a bit "round". Just to be clear: no one cares. No one will hire or fire you because of your muscle mass. Sure if you are obese you gotta lose weight for your own good: but body shape is not a factor to make it in the industry. If anyone has a different view (ideally 5y+ experience) happy to hear it.
Living healthily in IB is hard when you don't genuinely enjoy fitness or sports. Start with food, don't skip breakfast, don't have dinner too late. Force yourself to progressively increase the number of lunch and dinner you order to be on the healthier side of things... I try to keep carbs to only breakfast and 1 lunch or dinner per week. You'll actually start feeling less shitty and better endure the harsh hours to the point where you can start imagining adding gym slots to your calendar.
