Working 60 hours/week hurting my mental/physical health? Am I just weak/soft?
I started as a new analyst in S&T this summer, working about 6:30-6:30 every day, as well as some late night client events sprinkled in there. I know that these are great hours by finance standards, but I've felt my physical and mental health suffer significantly. A few examples are that I'm a light/anxious sleeper and it's hard for me to fall asleep right after exercising or when things from work are on my mind, and I'm also somebody who functions very poorly on less than ~7 hours. I also find myself using the weekends to catch up on sleep/meal prep/chores rather than hang out with friends or dates, and often flake on plans as I'm too exhausted to go out on Fridays, and I'm too worried about having to shift back to waking up at 5:30 on Mondays to go out on Saturday nights either. I've become a lot more easily agitated and hurt some of my relationships/friendships. It's hard for me to imagine living like my older bosses, who work similar hours to me on top of their kids/family/commute.
My question to you guys is, is this something I will or should try to adapt to (i.e., 60 hours is really not that bad and I probably wouldn't find a normal 9-5 to much better), or is this a sign that the job is just not for me (i.e. I'm not necessarily being soft/weak and the hours are truly what's causing my problems)? I think it's possible that these things are partly coming from the general post-college transition, which I could just be having a hard time adjusting to, so maybe I just need to suck it up until I get in the groove of things? How do I tell if it's the job/hours or my own attitude/time management that needs to be fixed?
You’re still new and it will take time to adjust.
I work in tech, and my hours are around 12-13 daily. M-F and weekends to study on materials related to work.
New habits will take about 2-3 months to adjust, and your body will adjust with it. Eat clean, get some workouts in, and get good well rested sleep and it will make things count.
It’s pretty normal at the start of anything new, but keep at it. You will pull through.
60 hours should be achievable with almost zero physical repercussions. It allows you 8 hours of sleep and at least an hour's leisure team every weekday and weekends completely off. You may or may not be cut out for it but that doesn't mean you're 'weak'. If you're not getting sufficient deep sleep, that could certainly be throwing things off. Get a sleep lab done.
+1 SB on suggesting a sleep lab. If OP feels poorly rested off of 8 hours of sleep, it could very well be sleep apnea, which is not something to be messed with. People are aware of asphyxiating during the day but completely gloss over it for the night for some reason.
