Working with back issues
Hi all,
This is sort of a different post.
I've been looking pretty extensively at all sorts of jobs in Finance recently. I'm definitely interested in this stuff, but my only concern is my physical ability to last.
I have pretty persistent back issues that make sitting at a desk for long periods of time difficult. The muscles in my back are very tight but also very stretched out and swollen on different sides. I might even have a pinched nerve somewhere, as I get tingling sensations from time to time.
Going to the gym has been a bit difficult as well, as I have been recommended by physical therapists to ease up on the amount of weight I put on my spine and system.
What do you all think I should do? Should I even begin to think about a job in banking, research or investing if things aren't better by the time I graduate?
Do you know what they’re from? I feel like the goal should be to solve the problem, regardless of what field you go into
Yeah its most likely poor lifestyle habits. I'm very tense and anxious all the time so I just lock into these bad positions of posture for long periods of time. Also a pretty skinny dude who played a sport in high school and was pretty right side dominant.
Definitely should get that checked out.
While your thing seems way more serious than mine, I've solved my bad back pain by wrapping a small blanket around my neck (similar to a neck pillow). It's helped out tremendously and I'm now able to work without feeling any pain. Hopefully you get your thing sorted out.
I've gone to physical therapists already. Should I try to go to a different one that has a different practice or something?
The tingling is not good, it's a sign of nerve compression. Get that checked out as it can cause a ton of issues. Waiting a few months for me cost me a few years of extreme numbness in my feet and leg.
that's scary as hell. how are you dealing with that/remedying the numbness? And where would I even begin to look? The PT I went to just gave me a few exercises and told me progress would come year by year.
I had an MRI done that showed I had spinal stenosis and DDD. And yeah, your approach is pretty dumb. Go get an MRI and pay for it if need be. Dont be like me...
Love this topic and wonder the same thing. Have gone through what you did op and had to get lower back surgery although symptoms are not completely gone away. Makes me think if I can last in an office once WFH is no longer a thing
Yeah man its super scary and it really just snuck up on me throughout the years
